Parents and students,
First I would like to say welcome to fourth grade! I am so excited to
work and learn with you all this year. Below are my classroom policies and
procedures. Following these will help make this year run as smoothly and
effectively as possible. I have also included materials needed for class as
well as a schedule for the semester. Parents, please look over this document
with your children and feel free to contact me with any questions, comments,
or concerns. I look forward to seeing you!
Classroom Expectations:
Students are to keep up with daily assignments and homework.
Students will respect themselves, other students, their teacher, and
anybody else they come in contact with in this classroom.
Raise your hand to be called on. DO NOT shout out.
Stay in your seat unless you are told otherwise.
Have a positive attitude.
Learn a lot and have fun!
Homework Expectations:
Practice problems or an alternate assignment will be assigned at the
end of every lesson. Students will have the opportunity to work on it in class
and ask questions. If students do not finish it in the allotted time in class it is
to be taken home, completed, and brought back the next day. There will be a
penalty for late work unless the student has an excused absence. Exceptions
will be made at the discretion of the teacher.
Materials Needed:
Two pocket take home folder
Spiral notebook (Wide Ruled)
Pencils
Red pens
Grading Scale:
100-90= A
89-80= B
79-70= C
69-60= D
50 and below= F
Student Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this semester, students will be able to:

Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, informative/ explanatory


texts, and narratives.
Produce and strengthen clear, coherent writing.
Use technology to produce and publish writing.
Term Schedule:

First Six Weeks:


o Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view
with reasons and information. (Standard W.4.1)
Introduce a topic or text clearly, state and opinion, and
create an organizational structure in which related ideas
are grouped to support the writers purpose.
Provide reasons that are supported by facts and details.
Link opinion and reasons using words and phrases.
Provide a concluding statement or section related to the
opinion presented.
o Write informative/ explanatory texts to examine a topic and
convey ideas and information clearly. (Standard W.4.2)
Introduce a topic clearly and group related information in
paragraphs and sections; including formatting illustrations,
and multimedia when useful to aiding comprehension.
Develop the topic with facts, definitions, concrete details,
quotations, or other information and examples related to
the topic.
Link ideas within categories or information using words and
phrases.
Use precise language and domain-specific vocabulary to
inform about or explain the topic.
Provide a concluding statement or section related to the
information or explanation presented.
o Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or
events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear
event sequences. (Standard W.4.3)
Orient the reader by establishing a situation and
introducing a narrator and/or characters; organize an event
sequence that unfolds naturally.
Use dialogue and description to develop experiences and
events or show the responses of characters to situations.
Use a variety of transitional words and phrases to manage
the sequence of events.
Use concrete words and phrases and sensory details to
convey experiences and events precisely.
Provide a conclusion that follows from the narrated
experiences or events.
Second Six Weeks:
o Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development
and organization are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.
(Standard W.4.4)
o With guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and
strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, and editing.
(Standard W.4.5)
o With some guidance and support from adults, use technology,
including the internet, to produce and publish writing as well as
to interact and collaborate with others; demonstrate sufficient
command of keyboarding skills to type a minimum of one page in
a single sitting. (Standard W.4.6)
