ANGIE: Hello I am Angie.
JESKO: Hello I am Jesko. We will be your hosts for the first two sessions this
morning. This year for 2016, well be looking at how Hong Kong and
WanChai specifically are at a crossroads in many ways in our lives.
ANGIE: Whether it is culturally, socially, technologically, or globally, we
see how that the more the world expands in global reach, the closer we
become to one another and the changes see happening on a global scale
equally affect us locally.
JESKO: The global TEDx community has been at the forefront with in their
communities around the world giving a platform for the voices of people
who share their stories, ideas, and vision.

INTRODUCE VINNY
JESKO We would like to invite on stage the curator of TEDx WanChai,
Vincent Ng to come up and share with us some of the great things that
have been happening around TEDx Wanchai and the Bridges hes been
building with different TEDx communities around all of Asia.

SPACE AND PLACE
JESKO: In the curating sessions, when we came to brainstorming looking at
the various perspectives that we could approach our theme of cross roads.
Several themes kept popping up. GLOBAL & LOCAL / IDENTITY / OLD &
NEW / and our current theme SPACE AND PLACE.
ANGIE: Space/Place and in the theatre 1200 We know our space, and
place as MCs Lets introduce our first speaker
AMY STERLING
JESKO: Our first speaker is living in in Boston, working at MIT, She is
looking at how we are mapping the brain, but not just that, it is how we
can make science more design based and Gamify the research of science.
ANGIE: Please welcome our first speaker, AMY Sterling.
DOC NORTH
ANGIE: Doc North does lots of Stuff, He has an online TV Show with
Discovery Channel Called Prototype This! In the making, He has a PhD
in Mechanical Engineering, Teaches innovation at UC Berkley he is
working on climate change, he likes to build things most interestingly his
work on biomimetics You can read all this in his Bio. But that is not why
he is here today.
JESKO: Yes and hes here today to share a much more personal story that
you cant see on TV. Please welcome a good friend DOC NORTH.

ANGIE: Our next speaker has been travelling the world
JESKO: Yes she knows quite a bit of the visual medium of photography and
is an Award winning Photojournalist with National Geographic.

JESKO: Ami has been working with us quite hard, and a couple of weeks
ago wrote to us saying I have to totally change my talk Its going to be
about well, I wont give it away but rest assured, you will fall in love.

you to change your talk?
ANGIE: Can you tell us, of all the places youve shot photography, Which
area has stood out to you the most?

Yes, Vinny and the team have put together some TED talks for us as
palette cleansers too deepen our experience.

SESSION BREAK
This almost terminates our first session, but before you go, we have two pieces of
information for you.
1) The Convene app: Those of you who download the app.. there is a push
notification of a short survey pushed through to you by Convene
Its lets us know what you thought of session, it is about 3-5
questions give or take.
2) The second thing is quite special: When you go outside there is a
photographic exhibition It is more than a photographic exhibition
it is a collaboration between justice centre Hong Kong and
photographer, Xyza Cruz Bacani. The project is called shared
pasts, it is a travelling exhibition that is based on a series of
interviews with Refugees seeking protection in Hong Kong. The
stories are not just from Refugees who are currently seeking
protection, but also of descendants of refugees whos lives have
also been impacted by the experience

Our next speaker is a favourite of mine, hes able to take what can be a
really boring topic and make it captivating... Henri will share with us a
Glimpse into the future and our everyday lives. Take a look in his bio, he
quite an interesting character I wont give too much away but one thing
is for sure, Finance and Technology are in for a big change.

DIVERSITY
JESKO: As you all know, TEDxWanChai has always been a strong proponent
of diversity, equality and inclusivity. We are proud to let you know that this
year, TEDxWanChai has continued its annual Youth and Diversity
Scholarship Programme. The programme was initiated with the aim to
engage younger generations in Hong Kong from varied socioeconomic
strata so as to empower them to initiate catalytic community experiences
themselves.
ANGIE: Yes last year, the youth and diversity programme partnered with
the womens foundation, Ten of which met with Anson Chan Hong Kongs
first ever female Chief Secretary, and Sui Mei Thompson the CEO of the
womens foundation for a mentorship lunch.
JESKO: This year The programme was scaled up immensely this year,
receiving a hundred applications, Thirty recipients were selected, who are
all here with us today, along with some of our partners. Let us know youre
here in the room, guys!
