1970s: Women's Rights & Neoconservatism

The domestic challenges of the 1970s included the rise of second-wave feminism and the women's rights movement, high inflation rates that peaked at 13% in the late 1970s, and economic stagnation due to increased federal spending on social programs and the Vietnam War which contributed to rising national debt and inflation. The decade also saw the Watergate scandal undermine public trust in the presidency and revelations about government secrecy and overreach of power in the Pentagon Papers case. These events helped spur the rise of neoconservatism and calls for smaller government led by Ronald Reagan in the 1980s.

The rate of inflation had been on the rising, and by

end of the 1970s , it was at 13%. Americans
learned that they were no longer economically
isolated from the world, and ushered in a new era of
neoconservatism domestically in response to the
economic depression
Two Questions:
What was a turning point in the rise of counter
culture opponents known as neoconservatives?
I believe the rise of neoconservatives stems from
economic distress caused by widespread social
programs that were enacted by the federal
government domestically. However i feel that the
issue of abortion brought upon the values of counterculture
and neoconservatives to a head, and is still challenged
today.
What was a reason behind the increase of American
stagnation?
I believe that the economic distress from the great society
programs and Vietnam hindered economic growth during
the 1970s from widespread federal spending. This caused
an enormous amount of debt to occur as well as inflation,
due to an increase in regulation of commerce, allowing
foreign countries to become dominant in once thriving
american industries.
