Bridge Layout and Foundation Excavation
(Refer DMBT Manual, chapter 3)
Profile of bridge axis: Check Elevations of BMs, axis pegs A(R) & B(L) and profile of
bridge axis to confirm the topography in General Arrangement drawing (GA), A(R) &
B(L) peg distance and span of the bridge.
Bridge layout: If topography confirm as per GA, bridge layout should be made
considering design cut slopes, retaining structures and other slope stabilizing
measures as per GA. If the design span and or profile or soil/rock type are different
than the actual in site, the technician has to immediately report with suggestions to
DDC/DTO Engineer for amendment or rectification in the design. All pegs of layout
must be kept safely till foundation is checked.
Foundation dimensions: Maintain cut slopes, geometrical dimensions of foundation
pits, foundation bed slope and stability of cut slopes. If any discrepancy occurs
between the design drawing and the actual site conditions, i.e. soil or rock
foundation, the technician has to immediately report with suggestions to DDC/DTO
Engineer for amendment or rectification in the design.
Slope stabilizing and protection works (only if necessary): Check adequacy of
protection works wherever provided. In most cases, lay out of the retaining structures
given in the GA does not comply with the site condition. Therefore, the technician
should give the instruction for the proper lay out of the retaining structures, bank
protection and drainage works as per actual site condition. The technician must also
ensure the overall stability of slopes and the river banks.
Additional works (only if necessary): In case any revision or rectification in the
design has to be made or relocation of any or all of the foundations has to be made
or the modification in stabilization/protective measures has to be made, the
technician has to immediately report to DDC/DTO Engineer.
Note:
If the difference in actual vs. design span exceeds 2 Mtr. then the Cost
Estimate must be revised.
If the foundation (e.g. rock or soil) is different from what was anticipated, then
the Design and Cost Estimate must be revised.

impurities. Flat and flaky shaped aggregates should not be used. Check the grading and
stocking. Aggregate should be well graded (5-10, 10-20, 20-40mm) and stocked
separately according to the size. Instruct to UC for rectification of any shortcomings.
Sand: Check visually content of the impurities such as clay, mud, organic materials etc.
If, such impurities are found, recommend to wash the sand before use. As far as possible
coarse sand shall be collected to availability at site.
Stones and stone blocks: Check visually the quality of stones. It should be un-
weathered, hard, sound and dense. Stone blocks should be chisel dressed or hammer
dressed or broken stone and to the proper size as per requirements. The size of stone
should be 100 to 225mm for plumb concrete, 150 to 200mm for gabion works and for
masonry works according to the wall thickness. If not as per requirement, instruct
accordingly to UC for rectification.
Tools and manpower: Check the availability of adequate tools for the execution of the
proposed work, measuring devices for ingredients mix, platform for mix preparation.
Check the availability of adequate skilled labors. If not available, facilitate UC to acquire.
Masonry works. Check/instruct the required workmanship in mortar preparation i.e. dry
mixing of various ingredients as per design drawings and specification, maintaining
water cement ratio and laying of the prepared mix.
Check/instruct the proper use of respective type of stone blocks as per design drawings,
the wall vertical to plumb, vertical joints, horizontal joints, mortar thickness, the voids
inside the wall, over all finishing. Ensure that the broken stone masonry for dead load
are laid with proper bonding along with peripheral cement stone masonry (filling or
packing is strictly not permitted). Check/ensure the geometric dimensions of the
structures according to the design drawing. Ensure that the whole structures are cured
for min. 7 days.
In retaining structures, where hydrostatic pressure is foreseen, sufficient weep holes
should be provided.
If not as per requirement, instruct accordingly to UC for rectification.
Reinforcement bars/Anchorage and steel parts fitting: Check/instruct for laying of
all the reinforcement, anchor bars, anchorage steel parts and other steel parts exactly
as per design drawing. Maintain proper cover for reinforcement bars. Instruct for proper
fixing of HDP pipes in Deadman beams for cable hoisting purpose.
Concrete works: Give special attention to layout of anchorage steel parts, anchor bars
and cable saddles. Check/instruct for the mix preparation i.e. dry mixing of various
ingredients as per design and specification. Measurement shall be in volume.
Check/instruct the water cement ratio, which should not exceed 35 liters of water per 50
kg of cement. Avoid excessive use of water, which will significantly decrease the
concrete strength.
Check/instruct for compaction by ramming of the placed concrete. Ensure that the
concrete layer is placed in horizontal layers not exceeding 25cm and compacted
adequately avoiding any voids.
In plumb concrete, maintain the minimum gap of 100 mm between the adjacent
boulders is fully maintained and that the boulders are not in contact with each other.
These gaps between the boulders are filled with concrete of designed mix and rammed

adequately avoiding any voids. Ensure that each layer of boulders is placed on 100 mm
thick concrete mats.
Check/instruct the required geometric dimensions of the structure according to the
design drawing.
In completed concrete structures, insure the quality of concrete i.e., soundness, voids
(honey combs) in the structure, wall vertical to plumb and line, over all finishing. Insure
that the whole structure is cured for min. 7 days.

Follow instruction given in MS 8 and below:
In case of D type bridge
Measure actual bridge span and elevations of the cable saddles. Permissible tolerance is 2
Mtrs. in designed and actual span and 5% for relative elevation difference.
Calculate hoisting sags and its hoisting cable elevations as per actual span and elevation.
Due to possible relaxation, re-checking and final adjustment of sag should be made after
24 hrs.
Ensure proper cable terminals, i.e. thimbles / bulldog-grips number, size, spacing and
appropriate fitting (grip towards the tension side of the cable), and the overlapping
length at cable ends etc.
In case of N type bridge
Assist for erection of Towers with the help of experienced bridge fitter.
Check the verticality of the towers. Ensure that the temporary fixation struts of the
towers are in place and in proper position.
Measure actual bridge span and elevations of the tower bases. Permissible tolerance is
0.3% for designed and actual span and 0.05 % for relative elevation difference.
Assist for cable hoisting sag/camber as per design cable hoisting elevations (ref.GA).
Due to possible relaxation, re-check and make final adjustment of sag and relative sags
after 24 hrs.
Ensure proper cable terminals, i.e. thimbles / bulldog-grips number, size, spacing and

Instruction
(Refer DMBT Manual, Chapter 9, 10 and 11)
Anchorage / Foundation Blocks
Maintain cut slopes,
Ensure geometrical dimensions of the anchorage and foundation blocks as per
drawings. If any discrepancy observed instruct UC for rectification.
Ensure proper workmanship for masonry and concrete works, i.e. chisel-dressed,
hammer-dressed and dry broken stone masonry. Dry stone masonry should be interlinked
with outer cement stone masonry to get monolithic bonding. Filling of dry stones as
gravity load is strictly not permitted.
Bridge erection works should not be initiated without completion of all anchorage and
foundation blocks as per drawings including gravity load and top layers.
Bridge Erection
Ensure safety measures.
In case of D type bridge
Assist for erection of walkway and steel decks. Suspenders should not be too tight and
too loose. Suspenders should be winded two times around the handrail cables.
