Background
It is widely recognized and accepted that national government and international organizations
cannot entirely resolve the problems of the economic and social development by themselves.
The role of the civil society is also crucial for success. For instance, rapidly increasing population
and youth unemployment problems in recent times sees an urgent need of a solution to
address it before the raindrops form ponds and ponds form an ocean. Moreover our natural
resources are limited as only 8.2 % of our country is arable. So to youth in rural areas, life holds
limited options and to them the lifestyle is unattractive. Hence they flock to the urban areas
where lifestyles are glamorous and facilities are plenty.
So the only result is that youth who get to the urban areas are left with no choice but to work in
small jobs due to financial constraints, academic qualifications and lack of jobs. Thimphu city is
trod on with more footprints every hour, from different parts of the country in hope of a better
future. The capital city that was crowded only in the Sunday market a decade ago now is filled
with wandering youth in every nook and canny of the entire valley. It is also observed that
almost every program either for the development of society or locality are created or
established by the government but after certain period of time when the project periods are
over, the people don’t continue the work. It either is terminated due to weak participation or is
underutilized.
Witnessing such rapid changes in a society over a short period of time makes us, as youth feel
more energetic and gives us encouragement rather than worries, sadness or problems. In fact
we are happy and are deeply grateful to our king and the country for bringing our country to
this stage. Now we have enough manpower and people to work, be it in government,
corporations, private sectors or back at homes in the fields. The present situation of our
country creates endless opportunities for making a living with the farsighted government
policies and support. But it is only possible if we join our hands together with a vision of youth
innovation and partnership for development.
We shall now prove ourselves worth being born in this country where the sun of gross national
happiness shines and spreads through the world. We shall join together as friends, as a family
and as citizens of this country and prove ourselves and be somebody.
Rationale
In our society; despite endless efforts by the government, we still feel programmed to be spoon
fed and be given jobs, look only for personal gain and don’t know the value of public property.
We do not know how to create, maintain and share the ownership of the community assets and
common wealth.
Unemployment is a major problem in our country but we should not forget to consider the
problem even within the employed people. Discontentment and other unsatisfactory situations
among them creates drastic downfall of the outcome of individuals. So Happy Valley Green
cooperative will not only create employments but will also assure happy environment amongst
the employed youth in Bhutan. This would ultimately contribute to the Gross National
Happiness.
This project is proposing to establish a youth cooperative. It will base on the fundamental
principle of Cooperative with some necessary features making HGC a unique but essential
cooperative. This cooperative will venture into all areas of services and businesses areas as per
its interest and potential of members. Every member owns and will be responsible for the
success of the cooperative. The cooperative will be so named as Happy Green Cooperative
(HGC)
HGC as a first of its kind in the country, would like to establish an attractive and ideal platform
for the young professionals who know, can and are strongly motivated; and with their different
ways of thinking; the school of thought that we believe can successfully contribute to our co-
operatives and our country’s development and economic future. HGC as a youth co-op with
young hearts full of innovative views and fast reactions has come up with lot of different fields
and enterprises and would like to contribute to our socio economic and nation building as
stated in this proposal.
Principle
The main guiding principle of Happy Green Group will be based on the principle of
cooperatives. There are two principles that we follow. They are worker cooperative within the
members and also we function as a producer cooperative in relation to other businesses and
farmers groups.
Objective
The main objective behind HGG is social benefits rather than monetary gains. The group will
only venture into businesses or activities that are eco-friendly and socially responsible in the
society. The Happy Green Group has the following objectives

environment and promotion of the use of eco-friendly materials
2. To become one stop shop for all eco-friendly needs and information’s
3. Generate employment to the youth and income for the farmers’
4. Contribute to the reduction of rural urban migration by creating businesses in the rural
