IDEAS
Music Video
Where Is My Mind- Pixies
My music video will be filmed outdoors around flowers, trees and water. The beginning will be
filmed in an industrial location and will have sound effects of cars and sirens and shouting. The main
character will slowly walk and sit down on the floor. I will edit this clip to look very dark and
contrasted. The character will have no makeup on and will wear dark clothes. There is then a
moment of silence in the song and the titles will appear on screen before dissolving into a shot of
colourful flowers. The character in these colourful shots will be the same, but instead she will be
wearing white and pastel colours with sparkly makeup and be happy. There will be close up shots of
flowers and butterflies and all set in countryside settings. This will contrast with the opening shot in
a very industrial location. I will use a large variety of shots and camera movements; I will edit the
video to the beat of the song and will slow sections down so that they play in slow motion. I will use
devices such as split screens in the editing to show the character looking at flowers and such. The
song fades out at the end and the colourful outdoorsy setting will fade into the industrial location of
the opening shot. I think that it would be a good idea to do a music video, as I would like to focus on
the aesthetic of the video.
My second idea will be based around the main character singing to the camera. This will be a close
up and then it will cut to a longer shot showing more people singing to the camera. The video will
cut between the shots of people singing and shots of people dancing.

I sent out a survey asking which idea is preferred. All of my respondents said that they preferred the
first idea.
It is much more artistic
The artistic shots being most prominent will work well with the song choice.
It is more detailed and would look visually appealing.

JUSTIFYING IDEAS
I decided to produce my first idea as my final project. It is a music video to the song Where is my
Mind by The Pixies. I think this video will work well as I will focus on the aesthetically qualities. The
colours of the video will be consistent throughout the video through the mise-en-scene, costume,
editing and make up. Although the video will focus on the aesthetic the qualities it will still have a
clear start, middle and end. The opening and closing shot will contrast the majority of the video by
being a lot darker and set in a city rather than in the rural setting of the rest of the video. I think the
mix of narrative and aesthetic with keep the audience engaged. I think this video will appeal to a
young audience as the shots will be colourful and fast paced.

TARGET AUDIENCE
I held a focus group to determine the target audience of my music video. The respondents said
It would appeal to people aged 14-26
As the target audience is young (teenage-twentys) the socio-economic group I will target most will
be group E as the majority of people in this age range are students, fitting into group E.
It would appeal more to females more because of the colours and the flowers
The target audience would also be similar to the target audience of similar artists. The genre of
alternative commonly attracts a youthful audience. The target audience for my video will also be the
same as the target audience for the genre of alternative rock. This audience is typically aged
Where Is My Mind Epik Music Videos
between 16 and 30 and are both male and female. The audience for this genre come from all classes
but working class is most common. Other artists in this genre such as Radiohead and the Foo
Fighters have this target audience so it would make sense if I had a similar target audience as the
song is of the same genre. Much of the audience of this genre likes to connect with their favourite
artists online as well as at concerts. As the audience for these bands connect with the artist online,
this is where my music video shall be shown. I will upload it to YouTube as this is where it is most
likely to be seen by the target audience. The audience of this genre read magazines such as Kerrang!
and NME to keep up to date. Ideally it would be good to have my music video on these sites as the
site audience would already be the specific audience I am targeting.
My target audience will be people aged 15- 30 and will belong to socio economic group E.
MARKET RESEARCH
The Pixies fit into the alternative rock genre. This sub genre of rock emerged from independent
music in the 1980s and gained wide popularity in the 1990s. This song was released in 1988 on their
debut album Surfer Rosa. According to a poll by Australian radio station Triple J it was voted 29th on
the Hottest 100 of All Time. It is one of their most popular songs despite never being released as a
single. As it was never released as a single it did not chart. The album however, spent 60 weeks in
the UK Indie Album Chart after being released and peaked at number 2. After being featured in Fight
Club in 1999 it gained wider popularity. Since then it has used in countless adverts, films and TV
shows. The song has 16.5 million views on YouTube. Only a few of their songs reached the Official
Top 40 Chart, but due to being featured in films and TV shows and being cited as influences to huge
artists they are still well known. Artists such as Nirvana and Radiohead are competitors as they also
fit into this sub-genre and so would have the same audience so would be direct competition. Both of
these bands are more popular so they would be big competition. Eight of Nirvanas singles reached
the UK chart, twelve Radiohead singles reached the UK chart while only two Pixies singles charted in
the UK. Creep is Radioheads bestselling single reaching number 7 in the UK charts and 205 million
views on YouTube. Nirvanas Heart Shaped Box charted the highest in the UK, reaching number 5;
with over 100 million views on YouTube; while Smells Like Teen Spirit charted an number 7 in the UK
but with over 526 million views online, making it their most viewed song. Where Is My Mind
however, didnt ever chart in the UK as it was not released as a single but gained popularity and has
become one of the bands signature songs. As a music video was never officially released for the
song. So I will make a music video for the internationally known song. It would make my video
unique, as there is not an original to compare it to. Radioheads Creep and Nirvanas Smells Like
Teen Spirit music videos focus on the band playing the song, whereas my music video will focus on
the visual style of the video. This will generate interest in my music video as it is different to many
music videos in the same genre
COMPETITORS
Radiohead is a band from the same genre and have a range of different music videos for their songs.
Where Is My Mind Epik Music Videos
The pictures above are all screenshots from different videos. One is stop motion, one is a
performance, the other is in a space helmet.
The video for Burn The Witch is different to many music videos in this
genre as it is stop motion. It uses bright colours throughout the video
which contrasts with the dark song. There is a group of main characters
in the video that lead the story. I will have
main charcater in my video, in which the
video will revolve around. As the video is an animation the band are not
playing in the video. There is a classical style animated band playing in the
video. Many music videos in this genre use a band playing the song in the
music video, so this video incorporates this but not in the typical way. I have chosen not to have a
band playing in my music video as I dont think it will fit into the aesthetic of the video. It will also
stand out as it is different to many videos already on the market. Many of
the shots in the video are long shots and wide shots. The shot the the left
is shown near the beginning of the video and establishes the setting of
the video. In this shot you can see the colours of the buildings and the
characters clothing. This are very colourful
and makes the place look like a toy town. This
matches the aesthetic of the video as the charcaters are all animated
toys. An effect has been added over the top of the video to make it look
like an old film. This matches the video as the characters clothing is also
old fashioned, along with cars. The makes sense as the video is set in a
time when people still believed in witches and would trial people to see if they were-hence the title
Burn the Witch. The camera does not move much during the video.
This is probably due to it being made using stop motion. I plan to use a
variety of camera movements in my video to make it more engaging to
watch. Flickering lights are used to light the scene on the left to
imitate the fire burning. This adds the effect of fire without having to
use or make any fire for the video. I think this is a good effect and
could use this in my music video as I plan to use candles and lighters.
The pictures above are screenshots of Nirvana music videos. These also show diversity in the genre
as they are all different. They all feature lip syncing, while two of the videos are intercut with
abstract shots.
Where Is My Mind Epik Music Videos
These videos show the diversity of the music videos in this genre. For this reason I think my music
will be suited to the genre as they are all different. These are popular videos and artists in this genre.
Smells like Teen Spirit is one of the most popular songs by Nirvana,
charting numer 7 in the UK, with over 500 million views on the
music video on YouTube. The video is very dark and shadowed. This
contrasts with the video for Burn the Witch. This shows how music
videos give the creators a lot of creative freedom. This means that
my video does not have to fit into certain constraints as long as it
works with the song and is appropriate for the target audience.
This video has a wider variety of shot types than the previous video does, as well as more camera
movements. The camera pans around the action a lot throughout the video to give the audience an
overall feel of the atmosphere as they get to see all of the room through the pans and variety of
shots. The video is of a performance so we see the band perfoorming but we also see the audience
which gives the viewer a sense of atmosphere as they can relate the audience on screen and almost
feel like they are there watching. The smoke and the dark colours give the video an underground
feel that the viewer can imagine watching. The whole video has a yellow hue to it due to the bright
lights being used to light the band. On the close ups and mid
shots of the band we can see how bright the light as you
cannot make out much of their features. As this light is so
bright it lights the whole room well and gives the yellow hue. I
like the idea of having a colour theme throughout the video. If
I were to do something like that I would make the hue subtle
and of a softer colour as to match the aesthetic of my video.
RELEVANT LEGISLATION
Vevo and YouTube work with the BBFC to rate music videos. On Vevo there is an information button
that you can click to see the ratings for the video. YouTube use a Partner Rating label which can be
clicked to reveal the rating of the video. On the smartphone app they also show the age rating (12,
15 or 18) underneath the video. The ratings work by a record label submitting their video to the
BBFC. The videos submitted are for online release in the UK and are expected to receive at least a 12
age rating. The BBFC will then watch the video all the way through and assign it an age rating based
on content such as: drug use, nudity, sexual content, violence and swearing. If a video is flagged for
bad content enough times then it will be taken down by YouTube until it has been improved.
Channels such as MTV censor music videos individually and decide whether or not they are suitable
to be shown on the channel and at what time. They can censor the lyrics by replacing them or by just
muting them. For example, in the song Beautiful Girls by Sean Kingston the word suicidal was
replaced with the words in denial; however in Pumped Up Kicks by Foster the People the songs
references to guns and bullets where not replaced but just muted. Some videos such as 99 Problems
by Jay-Z was only shown on MTV as an edited version between the hours of 6pm and 6am due to the
depiction of gun violence. Other songs were banned completely from being shown on the channel,
such as, Smack My Bitch Up by The Prodigy, due to violence, sexual scenes and misogynistic lyrics.
I will need to make sure I get parental permission to film any under 18s in my video and record them
in an appropriate manner due to the Child Protection Act. All the video content I use will be my own
that I have filmed, however, I do not own the rights to the song so I will need to obtain permission to
upload the video to YouTube.

HEALTH AND SAFETY
I am going to be using lighters and candles in my video so I will need to make sure everyone is aware
and is careful around the flames. Parts of my video will be filmed in a swimming pool so I will make
sure that my actors are careful in the water and can swim. I will also make sure to be careful with
the equipment as to not get it wet while filming. I will also be filming around flowers for my video so
I will make sure my actor does not have hay fever.

DESIGN FORMAT
I will be uploaded to YouTube and Weebly. My target audience likes to connect with artists online so
by uploading my video to YouTube it is most likely to reach the audience that I am targeting. The
song on YouTube has 14 million views and as the song is not a recent song it would be mostly
listened to online. As this would be where it would be most popular it would makes sense to upload
it here. YouTube would be better than TV channels such as MTV as the target audience would be
more likely to watch and listen on YouTube than on TV. I will upload my video to Weebly as this is
how it will be submitted and marked.
POTENTIAL ISSUES AND SOLUTIONS
For the open and closing shot of my video I would like to film on a cloudy day as it would add to the
miserable atmosphere, however, for the majority of my video I would like to film on a sunny day
with blue skies. To do this I will check the weather forecast before deciding what day to film on.
However, the weather forecast isnt always reliable so I will have secondary days to film on. My actor
could not turn up on the day of filming, so I will have an understudy ready to step in if needs be.
