Broadband Consideration

This document discusses techniques for broadband design of microwave devices, including the use of compensated matching networks, balanced circuits, and feedback. It provides examples and details of balanced amplifiers, Lange couplers, branch line couplers, and Wilkinson power dividers. The advantages of balanced amplifiers are outlined, such as the ability to design for flat gain and noise figure, high stability, higher output power, and the ability to still function if one amplifier fails.

Balanced Amplifier

EE-944 Microwave Devices II 16

Advantages of Balanced Amplifiers
The individual amplifiers can be designed for flat gain, noise figure
with good input and output VSWR.
There is high degree of stability.
The output power is twice that obtained from the single amplifier
If one of the amplifier fails, the balanced amplifier unit will still
operate with a 6dB loss of gain
Balanced units are easy to cascade with other units, since each unit
is isolated by the coupler
