Jesus at the Last Supper
I have told you this so that my joy may be in you
and that your joy may be complete
If the world hates you,
keep in mind that it hated me first
I have chosen you out of the world.
That is why the world hates you
If they persecuted me,
they will persecute you also.
They will treat you this way because of my name,
for they do not know the One who sent me
I have told you these things,
so that in me you may have peace.
In this world you will have trouble.
But take heart! I have overcome the world.
(John 15:11, 18, 19b, 20b, 21; 16:33; NIV)
Sometimes we sense a disconnect
between the constant joy and peace we proclaim
and our difficult daily experience.
But take a closer look at Jesus promises in the upper room.
Consider what He is sharing with His disciples (John chaps. 1317):
an enduring love, groaning and dying for those it treasures;
a triumphant joy, continuing to glow through deepest loss;
a proven peace, unchanged by tremendous pressure;
Gods own glory, shining brightest in rejection and suffering.
Jesus is sharing Himself,
broken and bleeding,
yet still the faithful, obedient, triumphant Son of God.
He is sharing exactly what we need in our daily circumstances:
a love, joy, and peace that are
genuine and unfailing.
