Vibration Measurement Techniques

This document describes general methods for measuring rotor imbalance. It discusses: 1) The basic measuring arrangement uses an accelerometer, vibration meter, and phase meter or stroboscope to determine the angle of unbalance relative to a datum mark on the rotor. 2) Instrumentation includes a vibration meter to measure vibration levels, and a phase meter or stroboscope to determine the angle of unbalance. 3) Additional equipment like tunable band pass filters can ensure measurements are made at the rotational frequency only to provide clean input signals.

General Measurement Methods

Practical considerations

The rotor to be balanced should

be easily accessible, and should
have provision for mounting trial
masses at various angles around it.
The mounting points should prefera
bly be at the same radius from the
axis of rotation to simplify calcula
tion. The datum position must be
marked on the rotor in such a way
that it triggers a pick-up installed
alongside it on a stationary part of
the machine. A non-contacting type
of pick-up is recommended, be
cause this will cause a minimum of
disturbance to the rotor. Fig.2. The basic measuring chain
