8 Violin II 2 Violin II 1 Violin II
6 Viola 2 Viola 1 Viola
6 Violoncello 2 Violoncello 1 Violoncello
6 Contrabass
Seating Suggestion:

In principle, Balcony Octet (Group B) is visible to the audience, while Offstage Quartet (Group C) is not. These twelve
people are taken from the orchestra string section.

Balcony Octet (Group B) is placed on the second floor balcony. If the hall has a left- and right-side balcony that extend to
the stage area, then split the octet up into two, and place them on the both sides of the balcony. There are three possible
variants in seating if this happens:

1) (the choice of the premire) 2) 3)

Balcony L: Balcony R: Balcony L: Balcony R: Balcony L: Balcony R:

Vn. I (top part) Vn. I (bottom) 2 Vn. I 2 Vla. 2 Vn. I 2 Vn. II

Vn. II (top part) Vn. II (bottom) 2 Vn. II 2 Vcl. 2 Vla. 2 Vcl.
Vla. (top part) Vla. (bottom)
Vcl. (top part) Vcl. (bottom)

If the concert hall has the balcony but not the right- and left- wings, then place the entire octet on the balcony. Follow
either of the three seating possibilities if possible. If not, then all of the 8 players can be situated nearby. If this is difficult,
then the octet can be placed on the first floor, but separated from the orchestra so that the sense of spatiality is achieved.

Off-stage Quartet (Group C) is to be placed behind the entrance door to the stage. In performance this entrance door is
opened just enough so that the communication between the conductor and the offstage quartet can be achieved.
Audiences will not see the quartet at all, but if the string quartet is positioned correctly, they will hear the sound emerging
out of somewhere afar.

Off-stage Hammer is the type of hammer that is used in the finale of the Sixth Symphony by Gustav Mahler. This will not
be seen by the audience, and the strike of the hammer should come through as a completely unexpected surprise. Even
though it is off-stage, the dynamic of the hammer should be perceived as loudly as possible.

One extra music stand off stage should be provided for off-stage piccolo (Flute 3). The player will come back after the
beginning passages are finished.

Rehearsal Suggestion:

Assuming that the players were given the parts in advance and they thorough understand the symbols utilized in the piece
(described from next page), at least the first rehearsal should be done with all players on stage. Thereafter, position the
string players in appropriate locations (balcony and offstage). Experience has proven that after the players gained a grasp
of how the piece is structured, an hour of rehearsal with the concert formation was sufficient.

Performance Instructions:

1) The full score is transposed!

2) To the conductor: When the tempo is slow, it is advised to subdivide beats wherever necessary in order to
produce accurate rhythms. Moreover, wherever possible, for measures in which the denominator of the time
signature is 8th note, conduct in 8th note. Suggested subdivision of a bar is provided on the score and parts
wherever appropriate.
3) Wherever necessary, bring up the dynamics of the balcony string players.
4) In no accounts the conductor and the players are permitted to make any passages rubato, except where fermata is
indicated.
5) Always trill with the note shown in the parenthesized note.
6) Adherence to the symbols explained from the next page is paramount to the success of the piece.
Symbols:

For all parts:

There are two types of grace notes to be noted. In the first

example, grace notes are played just before the main beat. In the
second example, the grace note is played on the beat.

Downward arrow before the note indicates that the player has to
flatten the pitch by approximately quarter-step.
Upward arrow before the note indicates that the player has to
sharpen the pitch by approximately quarter-step.
Muffle the sound immediately.

For woodwinds this implies that the sound should be forcefully

terminated by means of tongue stop, etc.

For strings this implies that the sound should be immediately

muffled by the available left hand fingers. Correct execution of this
would be similar to hearing the resonating open-string pizzicato
backwards on tape.
Flute: Both examples shown left indicate that the held pitch is to
be bent down/up with embouchure.

Flute: When this mouthpiece clef is shown, only the mouthpiece

portion of the instrument is used to play. Cover indicates that the
tube is sealed by hand completely, and Open is that the tube is
open.
Tongue Ram. Flute: 1) Finger the above pitch, 2) Cover the
embouchure hole completely with the lips, and do either of the
three things:

a) Tongue is moved to the fore with a strong flow of air and

suddenly stopped on the roof of the mouth ([hut])
b) With the strong flow of air, the tongue is moved into the
embouchure hole where it is stopped.
c) With a forceful inhalation through the embouchure, the tongue
is sucked onto the roof of the mouth and stopped at that point.

Other Instruments: Finger the written pitch, cover the end of the
instrument where mouthpiece is usually inserted, and do either of
the three things described above.

This produces the thud sound in the pitch shown in a parenthesis.

Cover the embouchure (or end of the instrument) with lips

completely and
blow into the instrument while playing the written pitches, (i.e. not
producing the ordinary sound (or pitches)) If necessary, enunciate
[h] to accentuate the air sound.
Roar Sound. Bass Clarinet: Finger the low pitches (often trilled
as shown in the above example), and alter the embouchure so that,
as the oral cavity becomes narrower, higher partials of the fingered
pitches would sound. The fingered pitches would not be sounding
prominently as the sound splits. It is one form of multiphonics,
and the sound is similar to the elephant!s roar. The notes without
notehead, connected with the empty glissando lines, shows the
general register the Roar Sound.

Woodwinds: with the exception of fingering indications for

Bass Clarinet and Oboes, Slashed circle indicates that player
plays with alternative fingering of the specified pitch, and the filled-
in circle indicates that the specified pitch is played with the ordinary
fingering. In this example, while sustaining the pitch (without re-
attacking), the player goes back and forth between the two
fingerings, thereby changing the timbre of the sound at each
change of the fingering.

Woodwinds: Fast, unmeasured and random sequence of

fingerings to create nervous key-clicks. No particular pitches
should be focused.

Horns and Trumpets: Random, quick sequence of different

fingerings. No particular fingerings should be focused.

Note that this is used in conjunction with the blowing air without
sounding the ordinary pitches.

Tam-tam: Hold a snare drum stick at the both ends with both
hands. Hold the tip of the stick loosely, and hold the handle of the
stick tightly. Put the tip of the stick on the surface of tam-tam,
perpendicular to the surface of the instrument and slowly scrape
down the stick. This results in the sound of a shrill shriek.
Vibraphone: Bow the specified instrument with the contrabass
bow.

Harp: In one motion, quickly scrape the written pitch!s string(s) with
fingernail(s), from bottom to top.

The dynamic markings in quotation marks indicate the relative

dynamics in which the special effect should be played. For
f, mf etc. example, in strings, toneless sound cannot ever be as loud as the
ordinary playing. But when mf or f is specified, try to play them
as prominent as possible.

Strings:

m.s.pont. molto sul ponticello

tasto sul tasto
n.vib non vibrato (under this, there must not be any trace of vibrato whatsoever!)
m.vib molto vibrato
batt. Col legno battuto

There are times in the music where notating duration of natural

harmonics becomes confusing, especially where the duration is based
on smaller than half notes. Therefore, wherever necessary to clarify,
the pitch of the open strings for such harmonics to be played on is
provided in parenthesis.
These two signs indicate the degree of bow pressure.

First one: Play with extreme pressure on the string. Except where
specified, bow sul tasto to achieve the effect of coarse, grinding sound.
Do not lift up the bow after playing, as this would result in producing
the actual pitch.

Second one: Bow with regular pressure.

Arrows connecting one mode of playing with another indicate the
smooth transition between the two modes of playing. Therefore, this
example shows the following:

Begin with regular bow pressure molto sul ponticello and gradually shift
into the fourth beat, where it is played with extreme pressure sul tasto.

Jet, or ricochet. Under this notation, do not bow normally after the bow
stopped bouncing. If the bouncing finishes before the glissando is
completed, do not attempt to complete the glissando.
In addition to the ordinary clefs, these are four different clefs that are
used in the piece.

First one shows the general area of the fingerboard. (See Snoring
Effect)

Second one instructs the player to play directly on the bridge. In this
event, focus on not producing ordinary sound but instead, the hissing
sound, i.e. it is important to focus on the toneless playing and not to let
the strings vibrate.

Third one instructs the player to play on the opposite side of the string.
In this piece this is used in conjunction with pizzicato with guitar
plectrum. Also note the inscriptions I, II, III and IV, which correspond to
which string to do the pizz. with.

Fourth one is used for Violin II. See example from mm. 55 to 57. After
the first beat, where pizzicato with plectrum is executed on the opposite
side of the bridge, the players go back and forth the four strings on the
normal side of the bridge, using the guitar plectrum as shown in the
music. While this action is being held, the left hand is making a
continual downward glissando.
In addition to the bow directly on the bridge clef, another mode of
notation was carried out in the section that commences after the 15
second fermata. This is to clarify the transition between the on the
bridge and the normal playings.

Regardless of the type of the notehead, specific pitches indicate, as in

the usual fashion, where to finger on the fingerboard. However,
wherever x is notated, play on the bridge, and try to be as toneless as
possible. When the normal notehead comes up, the bow hair is slid to
the molto sul ponticello position, except where notated.

The example here shows that:

The player is in the process of glissando, downward toward D-flat until

the beat 2, and upward toward G natural from there until the last 16th
note of the measure. Play directly on the bridge until the third beat, then
make a sliding shift to the molto sul ponticello on the second 16th note of
the beat. Go back to the bridge on the fourth beat, and play molto sul
ponticello again at the end of the measure.
In the section where this playing and glissando of the pitches are
combined, toneless sound would be shifting up and down (i.e. ambient
glissando), and this is intentional.

Have a medium or heavy plastic guitar plectrum ready. With this symbol
the player does the pizzicato with it.

Furthermore, 2nd stands of Violin I and II as well as 1st stand of Viola will
have their credit cards ready. Measures 159~163 will be played with
the credit card!s embossed surface touching on the string, thereby
creating coarse sonorities. Any credit cards would work, but especially
visa and mastercard are good as their digits are equally distributed.
Snoring Effect. See the first example. Rather than bowing normally,
put the bow on the string (at the frog-end of the bow hair right next to the
holding metal, and strings I and II in this example), and with enough
pressure, bring the bow (toward bridge in this example) parallel to the
string. No discernable pitch is heard, but rather the sound similar to the
snoring.

As shown in the second example, there are places where performers

are asked to put the bow on the strings at approximately ! away from
the frog. This creates more sparse sonority.

When executing this effect, it is important that: 1) every bow hair is

touching the string; 2) the bow is given strong enough pressures and; 3)
brought absolutely parallel to the string. The position of the bow
(whether at the frog or ! away from the frog) must be locked so that
the player would not bow in a customary way as the bow is brought up
parallel to the strings. If necessary, rather than placing the bow 90
degrees to the strings, angle it slightly. This may help prevent the
completely lifeless sound.
The score is transposed.
