Mrs. Gicking
Garnet Valley High School
552 Smithbridge Road
Glen Mills, PA 19342
Dear Mrs. Gicking:
Recently, I have researched three colleges of great interest to me: George Washington University,
University of Virginia, and University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. George Washington University is
considered a safety/middle of the road school because of its high acceptance rate and my qualifications.
The required GPA for this school is a 3.65 and the required SAT is 1,340. University of Virginia is
considered a reach school for me because it is notoriously difficult to get into for out-of-state students
such as me. The required GPA for this school is 3.76 and the required SAT is 1,415. University of North
Carolina would also be considered a reach school because it is very difficult for out-of-state students to
get into. The required GPA for this school is 3.72 and the required SAT is 1,420. Although I am unable to
change my SAT and GPA a whole lot, these schools all require 1-2 letters of recommendation, which I
can work on obtaining before the start of application time.
I chose these universities for several reasons, including their high-ranking status, location being in or
around a small or large city, student size, medical internship programs, offered majors in pre-med and the
sciences, and activities within and outside the designated campus area. I chose George Washington
because it is one of the few colleges that I have visited and thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful campus. I
love being surrounded by a diverse group of people, so the large Washington DC city campus that George
Washington encompasses suites my needs. I chose University of Virginia because it is an excellent school
for those desiring to enter the medical field. UVA, like George Washington, also has a beautiful campus,
but it is more of a small suburban area as compared to a large city. Lastly, I chose University of North
Carolina Chapel Hill because it is also a great school for those desiring to enter the medical field. Also,
UNC has exciting sports teams to watch such as their NCAA D1 Basketball Team. Overall, I chose these
schools because they are somewhat far away from where I live, but not too far enough that I wouldnt be
able to visit easily during breaks.
As mentioned earlier, I would like to major in the sciences, specifically down the pre-med track. The
three schools that I have chosen offer a variety of science classes and pre-med tracks, therefore suiting my
preferences to gain knowledge and the prerequisites for my desired future career of a sports medicine
doctor. For example, besides for all three schools offering the pre-med track, they offer majors in biology,
chemistry, human biology, biochemistry, organic chemistry. These classes appeal to my science interests,
and I can see myself enjoying what these schools have to offer to further my future and career.
One detriment that all these schools have are the exorbitantly high cost of tuition. George Washington
costs around $68,000, which is mainly due to its location in the nations capital of Washington DC.
However, this school does offer more scholarships than other schools in the area do, therefore lowering
the overall cost of college. After using the net price calculator, I discovered that I would receive $17,000
in scholarships. The overall cost of my attending this school would equate to $51,000. I would be able to
afford going to this school because of the funds that my parents are generously donating to me, but I am
unsure if I want to have my parents pay that high cost still.
All three of these colleges offer a variety of activities, both outside the campus and on-campus. These
colleges offer fraternities, recreational/intramural sports teams (such as tennis, crew, and racquetball), and
leadership teams like the student government. For instance, George Washington, due to its city-location,
offers opportunities to explore in the city such as adventuring around Capitol Hill, the White House, the
Smithsonian Museum, and the National Air and Space Museum. University of North Carolina has a
Division I NCAA sports team that will provide exciting entertainment for March Madness. Lastly,
University of Virginia has beautiful, green parks which will make studying a much easier task.
In conclusion, these colleges perfectly fit my personality type. According to my Myers-Briggs results, I
am an ESFP, meaning that I am an outgoing, talkative, people-loving, life loving person. George
Washington University, UNC, and UVA all fit in this personality type because they provide sufficient
extracurricular activity as well as offer a wide variety of majors/courses in which students have plenty of
time to interact, socialize, and collaborate (i.e. biology labs). Due to the fit of these colleges with my
personality type and my future interests, I can excitedly consider pursuing my education in the next four
years at these three colleges.
Respectfully,
Anish Rana
