Be fore I ge t into this, I want to clarify a fe w things. First, I am not trying to te ll you what your job de scription should
be . Se cond, I am not trying to te ll your com pany (or any othe r) how the y should write the ir job de scriptions or how
to run the ir busine ss. Third, job de scriptions are cre ate d by and be long to the com pany. Forth, the inform ation in
this article is not inte nde d to be the last and only de finitive word on the subje ct of job de scriptions, it's not. It is
sim ply m y thoughts on the subje ct.
The re are hundre ds of com panie s, e ach of which has it's own m e thod of doing things. Som e of the se com panie s
have m ore than one e ngine e ring office ; som e m ay have as m any as twe nty. W ithin e ach of those com panie s the re
m ay be as fe w as te n pipe rs or as m any as a thousand total pipe rs. Eve ry com pany has job de scriptions. Most
com panie s, in fact, will have two type s of job de scriptions. I do not k now if all e ngine e ring com panie s (that do
piping) use the two job-de scription approach, but m ost of the tim e the re is a big diffe re nce be twe e n what the y call
you and what assign you to do.
Norm ally the first job de scription is pure ly for the purpose of e m ploym e nt and pay scale . The se cond job de scription
is functional. It is spe cific to a job assignm e nt. This is what you actually do and m ay change from tim e to tim e
without a change of pay. This is not unlik e the m ilitary; the y have rank and the y have assignm e nts. The y will have
som e one with the rank of Sarge nt who is assigne d as a C re w C hie f on a he licopte r, a Sarge nt who is a chie f cook in
the m e ss hall or a Sarge nt who is in charge of truck re pairs in the m otor pool. Your e ngine e ring com pany m ay use
this sam e ide a and have a 'rank ' of 'Se nior De signe r', who is assigne d to plant layout, or as a che ck e r or as a fie ld
e ngine e r.
Pe ople who say that all job de scriptions should be only this or only that are tak ing a ve ry narrow vie w of the subje ct.
As state d be fore , job de scriptions, be it pay scale or functional, are the pre rogative of e ach individual com pany. It
he lps e ach of us to k now what a spe cific com pany use s whe n we are applying for a job at that com pany. It is also
ve ry im portant to fit in to the com pany's job de scriptions once we ge t the job. For piping m anage rs and supe rvisors
it he lps to k now both the pay scale and functional job de scriptions use d at othe r com panie s. This can be critical
whe n the y hire an e m ploye e from anothe r com pany.
