Mexican American War

The Mexican American War began as a result of tensions between American settlers in Texas and the Mexican government. After Texas declared independence from Mexico in 1836, it existed as an independent nation for 10 years before being annexed by the United States in 1846, leading Mexico to break off diplomatic relations and sparking war between the two countries. The war lasted 20 months and resulted in a major victory for the United States, allowing it to gain control of Texas as well as territory in California and the Southwest through the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.
