1. (a) Draw a typical cross section of a permanent way. What is the basic function of
each component? (5 marks)

(b) What is creep in rails? Enumerate various theories associated with creep and
explain any one. (5 marks)

2. (a) Explain the necessity of grade compensation at curves in a railway track. (2


marks)

(b) Write a note on negative super elevation. (2 marks)

(c) A 6 degrees curve branches off from a 3 degrees main curve in an opposite
direction in the layout of a B.G. yard. If the speed on branch line is limited to 35.5
kmph, determine the speed restriction on the main line? Given cant deficiency = 7.62
cm (4 marks)

4. a). Draw a neat sketch of a simple right-hand or left-hand turn out and show its
various component parts. (5 marks)

(b). Give classification of various types of signals in railway engineering. (5 marks)
