Section Two: Teacher Candidate Background Experiences

Introduction

In order to illustrate my skills and teaching style in an accurate and real sense, it is impor-

tant to include background information about my own personal experiences within the world of

education. This section will explore who I am as a person, what I have experienced thus far and

how it has brought me to this point in my education. Section two will also highlight important

skills and strategies that I have developed based on work and volunteer experiences. All of these

experiences and events have influenced me both personally and professionally. Additionally, this

section will introduce my Philosophy of Education as well as my resume which will both

demonstrate that I possess the necessary skill set and attitudes to be a successful educator

throughout my career. My hope is that my passion and dedication to children and their growth is

evident.

Educational Background

As a young student I was like many others in the fact that I was not 100% sure what I

wanted to do with my life or how I should continue with my education after high school. I was

not one of those children the dreamed of becoming a teacher from a young age. Rather through

my different life experiences I was able to find my passion in education.

My experiences, although not obvious to me as a child, began to shape my future from a

very young age. Throughout elementary school I always associated school and the classroom

with a level of safety and fun. I enjoyed going to school everyday to see my friends, learn new

things from my teachers, and work my hardest to do my best both in the classroom and for ex-

tracurricular activities. As a child I immediately gravitated towards athletics and the different

sports teams that I was able to join. I loved the camaraderie and sense of community that was

built on each team that I was apart of. I have fond memories of the practices, games and tour-
MSED ELEMENTARY PORTFOLIO PROJECT ! 10
naments that our coaches arranged for us. I also took part in campaigns for student council and

other clubs around the school. I think that these memories stick out to me partly due to the fun

that we had participating in them but also because of the staff participation. Without the staff and

their willingness to run these extra clubs, my elementary experience would not be the same.

When I think about my high school experience, it is very reminiscent of my elementary

experience. The teachers that I remember were individuals who were enthusiastic and dedicated

to their jobs as educators. They took the extra time to help students after class, gave up their time

to run extra circulars and made sure students were given the opportunity to reach their potential.

When it came time to pick a path for after high school I remember it being a rather con-

fusing and scary time of my life. Some of my friends had known exactly what they wanted to do

and how they were going to get there. I on the other hand did not have that same luxury. There

were so many possibilities and options for my future it was hard to know where to begin. I was

however, lucky enough to have supportive individuals around me to help me make such an im-

portant decision. These individuals included my parents, siblings and different teachers from my

high school. After some discussion, I realized that it would be important to study something of

interest. If I was going to spend the next four years of my life dedicated to getting ready for a

career in a specific industry it was important that I was truly interested in the subject area. With

the help of my supporters I decided on Criminal Justice and Public Policy at Guelph University.

Looking back on my decision, I think that I was drawn to criminal justice because I have always

loved to help people. I am able to see the good in people and want to see them succeed whether

that be in life or on a simple math concept. With this drive for helping people, I completed my

bachelors degree at the University of Guelph. Throughout this time I developed certain skills that

as a teacher are very beneficial. These skills include time management, organization, planning,

the use of technology and most importantly collaboration. Without necessarily realizing it, I
MSED ELEMENTARY PORTFOLIO PROJECT ! 11
think that these skills along with my family directed me straight towards a career in education. I

was lucky to have examples of great educators within my family as my grandfather, father, aunt

and sister are all involved in the field of education. I think that their influence has helped to in-

still a love of school and a passion for education in every sense of the word.

Work Experiences

Growing up, I was lucky enough to attend a camp that catered to children and families

affected by childhood cancer. A family member of mine was unfortunately diagnosed as a young

child and has since made a full recovery. This unfortunate diagnosis allowed our entire family to

experience summers at Camp Trillium. After attending the camps for many years I was able to

volunteer as a counsellor and eventually work as a high ropes coordinator and counsellor. These

camp memories were some of my first experiences in a leadership role with young children, out-

side of school. Although I did not know at the time, my time at camp became the basis of my

teaching philosophy. My time at camp helped to teach me invaluable skills like responsibility,

planning, organization, time management and most importantly creativity. Each week the staff

was to come up with new and exciting activities for the weeks campers. I was able to come out

of my shell and truly give 100% of my energy to the campers. My participation with the Camp

Trillium association laid a very solid foundation for my continued journey towards becoming an

educator.

Later in my life I found myself looking for a job that ignited something inside of me. I

wanted to find a career where I was excited to go to work every day and make a difference. I

found myself working as a child and youth worker in group homes around the area. Each day

was a different adventure that taught me new strategies to employ when working with young

people. Soon after I became an education assistant with my local school board. I was able to see

the day to day activities and approaches used by both teachers and other support staff. I devel-
MSED ELEMENTARY PORTFOLIO PROJECT ! 12
oped my knowledge and skills for working with individuals on the autism spectrum. I observed

and implemented behaviour management techniques as well as different classroom management

strategies. I enjoyed working with individual students on a daily basis but wanted to continue my

own education and prepare myself for the role of a teacher. My hope was to one day have my

own classroom where I would be able to implement all of the things that I had learned from those

before me.

School Observations and Classroom Application

My school observations began during my work as an education assistant. I began as a

supply and was able to be a witness in classrooms of all ages and to children of all exceptionali-

ties. One of my most memorable classroom experiences was in a special education classroom in

a high school. Each of the students had both physical and mental exceptionalities. Each had an

individual education plan and was supported by the educational assistants within the room. My

time in this room helped to teach me the skills of time management, planning for specific stu-

dents as well as the documentation associated with special education.

Another great learning experience was observing in a behavioural resource classroom or

BRC classroom. The self-contained classroom had 5 students, 1 certified teacher, 1 child and

youth worker and 3 educational assistants. The classroom management strategies, self-regulation

skills and social skills development that I was able to observe was invaluable. I was able to wit-

ness the team of staff work together seamlessly in order to do what was best for each student.

Due to the number of students in the classroom, the students were able to have beneficial special-

ized instruction, outdoor education and specific time focused on behaviour modification and skill

development. Accommodations were made for each individual and the technology in the class-

room was utilized effectively to help enhance each students learning. Each student was able to
MSED ELEMENTARY PORTFOLIO PROJECT ! 13
use a math program on their iPad that was catered to their learning levels using games and activi-

ties that aligned with the curriculum standards.

My time in classrooms has been the most beneficial in my journey to becoming an educa-

tor. The practical experience that I have gained will continue to help me throughout my career.

Although two students will never be the same, these real life examples can help guide me as a

teaching professional. My experiences have taught me to employ best practices when it comes to

the teacher competencies but most of all it has taught me that professional collaboration is the

key. The education of a student is the product of a team of individuals coming together to do

what is in the best interest of that particular student. Working well with your team can make all

the difference in the life a student.

Philosophy of Education

My portfolio thus far has focused on my ideas and the concepts of teaching that I find

most important within the realm of education. My Philosophy of Education is a concise docu-

ment that houses these ideas and solidifies my thoughts on education. It is a critical document

that communicates how I as an educator, feel about how a student, teacher, staff team as well as

an overall education system should be conducted. My philosophy will focus on the school, the

curriculum, student learning, the learner, assessment, classroom management and the teacher.

The School

Education plays a vital role in a childs life. Therefore the role of the school is as well a

crucial part. Educators are entrusted with both the academic and social growth of the students

that come before them. Students physical, emotional and mental safety are turned over to the

school and its employees during each school day. I believe that the mission of the school as an

institution should be that it is a safe place for all students where they feel both accepted and pro-

tected and able to thrive. A school reflects the society in which it is built. The school is influ-
MSED ELEMENTARY PORTFOLIO PROJECT ! 14
enced by the political standing and beliefs of those in power. The daily operations of the school

need to provide both students and parents with assurance that they will receive a quality educa-

tion. The school is the first socially constructed institution that is responsible for students devel-

opment of citizenship, self-improvement and preparation for their desired occupation.

The Curriculum

Curriculum is the basis of learning for all students. The curriculum should provide a bal-

ance between usable life skills such as mathematics, reading and writing as well the more hidden

curriculum. Although it is not written into the state standards it is necessary for educators to help

students to improve upon their own social skills, self-regulation skills and coping strategies.

These skills become integral to an individuals well being beyond their school years. Well adjust-

ed young people will turn into well adjusted adults that are able to confidently navigate the un-

certainties of their lives. These teaching practices will look different in every classroom as each

class is a unique culture with different needs. These practices should therefore be at the discre-

tion of the teacher and individuals involved with the students.

The state curriculum should also focus on the interests of the students. It should encour-

age learning while also allowing students to live as children. The curriculum is there to guide

teachers while making sure that students continue to grow and learn in a suitable environment.

Assessment

In order to help students continue to move forward in their learning, it is necessary to as-

sess students regularly. Assessment becomes a tangible piece of evidence that shows a students

level of understand and provides teachers with the necessary information to continue to scaffold

their learning. The ideal method of assessment however is not one that is universal. Just as each

student may learn in a different way, their method of assessment should match accordingly. It is

important for teachers to utilize different methods of assessment in order to truly see an accurate
MSED ELEMENTARY PORTFOLIO PROJECT ! 15
picture of a students understanding of the curriculum. The variety of assessment may include

some paper and pencil test assessment, informal check ins, student worksheets, student confer-

ences, observations and and class discussion. The goal of assessment in education is to determine

what the student does or does not know and develop a plan for how the teacher will help the stu-

dent to fill in their gaps in knowledge.

Classroom Management

I believe that in order to foster a students innate potential is to effectively utilize class-

room management strategies. By using strategies within the classroom, students will be prepared

to navigate through their educational journey with comfort and ease. The students will be able to

rely on structure and have the ability to anticipate and prepare themselves for their learning. The

use of schedules and a framework within the classroom allows students to alleviate their stress

and focus on the talk in front of them. Classroom management is a great tool to help establish

student-teacher relationships built on trust and respect. Expectations should be clear, students

should be treated with dignity and recognition should be given.

Universal techniques that can be applied in almost every classroom include the use of ex-

pectations. All students should have a clear understanding of what is expected of them and why.

It is extremely important to develop these expectation with the students and involve them in the

process. The guidelines of behaviour become more meaningful when students have a hand in

their creation. However, in order to create these classroom protocols it is important for teachers

and students to begin with a positive relationship. Respect, appreciation and consideration of

others are the basis of classroom management. Additionally, there should be a focus on positive

behaviour of students rather then punishment of negative behaviour. Although this cannot be the

case for all situations, it is best practice to focus on students positive behaviours to build them up

rather then tear them down.

The Teacher

As a teacher is responsible for the development of young minds, it is important for teach-

ers to receive an adequate level of training that gives them the necessary skills and preparation

for this important task. A teacher should be committed to growing and learning as an educator

for the betterment of their students. I think that it is important for pre-service teachers to be given

the opportunity to be in classrooms and learn first hand what skills are necessary to manage an

effective classroom. An emphasis should be placed on the practical experience within a teachers

own preparation for the classroom. The theory comes to life and is better understood as the foun-

dation of the classroom when you are able to experience it with the students. The subject matter

and curriculum standards are also important for teachers to be aware of. A student often sees

their teacher as an expert in every field that they teach. It is important for educators to be aware

of the subjects that they are instructing and deliver their knowledge to students like experts.

In order to thrive in the educational environment, a teacher must also possess certain

qualities that will set them up for success in their career. One of the most important qualities is

patience. Students will often challenge teachers, days will be tough and hours will be long. Pa-

tience along with passion for the job will help individuals to continue to be an effective educator.

The ability to collaborate and work well with others is also an essential quality to possess. A

team of individuals work together to assist in a childs learning. Teachers need to be able to uti-

lize those around them, and work collaboratively with colleagues to create a plan and environ-

ment that is most beneficial for the students. The ability to reflect is another one of the essential

qualities a teacher should have. This quality can be developed and refined over time but it is vital

to an educator. Reflection after every lesson, meeting and unit can help teachers to refine their

methods, reteach when necessary and continue to grow as an educator. I think it is important for

teachers to utilize reflection in their own practice as well as model it for students in order to rein-
MSED ELEMENTARY PORTFOLIO PROJECT ! 17
force such a critical skill. I look forward to putting the ideas mention in my Philosophy of Educa-

tion into practice and continuing to use my reflection skills to refine and improve my own teach-

ing skills.

Resume

My resume highlights my skills and assets in relation to the education profession. includ-

ed is my education background, work experiences and other relevant information that proves I

have the necessary qualifications to continue to step forward on my journey as an educator.

Conclusion

It is my hope that this portion of my portfolio provided a well-constructed guide of my

background experiences and the valuable skills I have gained from each of them. My experiences

have taught me to put into practice many of the teacher competencies such as student accommo-

dations, culturally responsive teaching, classroom management and collaboration. My experience

has also given me first hand experience with best teaching practices including community cir-

cles, class participation and utilizing different methods of teaching for Gardiners theory of the 7

types of learners. The practical experience that I was able to gain for my own education, work,

volunteer and student and classroom observations reinforce the theories and ideas developed by

Gardiner, Skinner, Calkins, Fountas and Pinnell. These minds have paved the way for good

teaching practices and gave way to further innovation within the education community.

In the next section of the portfolio, artefacts of my physical work will be used to exempli-

fy by abilities to perform the practical tasks of teaching. Section 3 will highlight all of my skills

as a pre-service teacher while relating to the teachings and practices of relevant theorists and ex-

perts.
