Yesterday was my birthday. I got a lot of presents from my family. All the gifts were
wrapped in colored paper. Some of them were large, but others were very small. Some
were heavy, and others were light. One square parcel was blue; there was a book in it.
Another one was long and narrow; it had an umbrella in it. My sister gave me a big round
parcel. He thought it was a ball, but it wasn’t. When I removed the yellow paper that
covered it, I saw that it was a globe of the world.
My brother gave me another present. It was a big box wrapped in green paper. I
opened it, and found another box covered with red paper. I removed the paper and I saw a
third box; this one was blue in color.
Everyone laughed as I opened the boxes. There were six of them. In the last one I
found a small white envelope. There was a piece of paper in the envelope which said:”Go
to the big bed room. Look in the cupboard near the window. You will see three suitcases:
a black one, a brown one and a grey one. Your birthday present is in one of them.”
I went to the large bedroom. I went to the cupboard and began opening the suitcases. I
had to open all of them before I saw my present. I was very happy. It was just what I
wanted-a portable typewriter.

Bob and Don go to the same school. They both needed some new clothes for school and
they decided to go shopping together in the new department store.
First the two friends went to the men department to see the suits that were on sale. The
salesman helped them find the right size and they each tried on several suits. Bob found a
light grey suit right away and he bought it. Don couldn’t make up his mind which one to buy,
but he finally selected a blue suit. The boys also bought two pairs of pants because they were
not too expensive.
Next, they went to the shoe department. The clerk measured their feet and brought each of
them several pairs of shoes to try on. It didn’t take them very long to get their shoes. They
didn’t really need socks, but these were on sales, too, and they decide to buy several pairs.
Don had to get some shirt and Bob wanted to get a sweater. While Don went to the shirt
department, Bob went to buy his sweater. It only took Don a few minutes to select his shirt,
and then he went to the sweater department to meet his friend. Bob tried on every sweater in
his size,, but none of them look good on him. The salesman said that he would have some
more sweaters in a few days and Bob said he would come back then.

III. DATING

76
Do young people go out on dates in your country?
How old are they when they start dating?
Where do thy like to go?
Who usually pays – the man, the woman, or both?

Read the information below:

Young people have more freedom in North America than in many other
countries. They often start dating around the age of 14, and do not need an
older person to go with them. They go in groups or couples to school events
(dances, plays, and ball game), parties, restaurants, movies, and sport events.

For most teenagers, dating is just for fun. It does not mean that they want to
get married. Young people may even date several friends at the same time.
They usually choose their own dates. Some times, however, someone arranges
a date for two people who do not know each other. This is called a “blind date”

Either a man or a woman can invite someone on a date. If there are expanses,
the man and woman often “go Dutch”; this means they share the cost.
Sometimes, however, one person pays for both people

(Source: English for International Communication, Student’s Book 1)

To check your comprehension, please answer the questions below

1) In what age do young people often start dating?
2) What kind of events do they like to visit?
3) What do young people do dating for?
4) How do they usually date?
5) What does “go Dutch” mean?

III TOUCHY TOPIC

In North America when people meet each other for the first time, they talk about things
like family, work, school, or sport. They ask questions like “Do you have any brothers or
sisters?”, “Where do you work?”, “What school do you go to?” , and “ Do you like
sport?” They also ask questions like “Where do you come from?” and “Where do you
live?” These are polite questions. They are not personal or private.

But some things are personal or private, and question about them are not polite.. People
don’t ask questions about a person’s salary. They don’t ask how much someone paid for
something. It is Ok to ask children how old they are, but it is not polite to ask older
people their age. It is also not polite to ask people questions about politics or religion
unless you know them very well. People don’t ask unmarried people “Why are you
single?” and they don’t ask a married couple with no children “Why don’t you have any
children?”

(Source: English for International Communication Student’s book 1)

C. Reading
Read the reading text below which explaining about invitation and then answer the
questions about the text. Do it in a group of four.

In Canada and the United States, people enjoy entertaining at home. They often invite
friends over for a meal, or just for coffee and conversation. Here are the kinds of things
people say when they invite someone to their home:
“Would you like to come over for dinner Saturday night?”
“Hey, we’re having a party on Friday. Can you come?”

To replay to an invitation, either say thank you and except, or say you are sorry and give
an excuse:
“Thanks, I’d love to. What time would you like me to come?” or
“Oh sorry I have tickets for a movie.”

Sometimes, however, people use expressions that sound like invitations. For example:
“Please come over for a drink sometime.”
“Let’s get together for lunch soon.”
“Why don’t you come over and see to see us sometime soon?”

These are really just polite ways of ending a conversation. They are not real invitations
because they don’t mention a specific time or date. They just show that the person is
trying to be friendly. To replay to expressions like these, people just say:
“Sure, that would be great!” or
“OK, yes, thanks.”
So next times you hear what sound like an invitation, listen carefully. Is it a real
invitation or is the person just bring friendly?
(Source: English for International Communication, Studet’s Book 1 Cambridge, 1996)
