PREFACE
As we are living in the age of IT & ICTs. Library is a center of knowledge and considered as a
decent source of information. Libraries are playing a key role for the dissemination of
Information. University libraries act as gateway to information and knowledge. I have learned
lessons imaginably the hardest way, which are harsh for my errors. I have tried my best to deep
into major problems faced by libraries.
My internship is totally my interest area. During this internship I learnt many things related to
library. I tried my best to learn about the whole library process as well.
INTRODUCTION
University History
National Textile University (NTU) Faisalabad was established in 1959 as Institute of Textile
Technology with the special funds of industries. The first batch of graduate students was passed
out in 1966. In 1976, the institute was upgraded to college and named National College of
Textile Engineering whcih was affiliated with UET. The college was given university status on
November 2002.
National Textile University (NTU) is a federal institution imparting high-quality higher
education at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

NTU LIBRARY
NTU library is the educational soul of the campus. Designed to support faculty research
and student learning, the stat of the art library houses over 20000 books, 1200 reference titles, 33
print journals, multiple electronic databases and collections of DVDs, CDs, videos and
newspapers. New electronic resources are being added to complement the core book and
periodical collections.
NTU library is a big resource for all students. Whether you are working on thesis or a research
project, as a researcher you want to read the latest magazines and journals, join the library event,
or watch a DVD or video, youll find the library to be a comfortable, welcoming place for work
or leisure.
The experienced, friendly staff welcomes your inquiries and provides assistance for
your academic work. The library offers workshops in library skills and information literacy, and
plan events and activities, workshops for the learning of students of the campus.
Details information about the library, its services/facilities, policies, hours and other general
information are just a click away.
Library Administration
The specialized supervisory staff of the library includes Chief Librarian/ Incharge is the
principal officer of the library.
Currently the library has one professional, four paraprofessionals and others: -

MISSION
The mission of NTU Library is to grow the academic requirements for students and
teachers as well. The objective is to deliver information about the Textile Industry and Human
Resources of Pakistan and to collaborate with industry; produce high quality research and
provide excellent educational services. The aim is to achieve quality in the provision and
promotion of information services. It has dedicated to assist students and teachers to gain benefit
of information resources.
FACILITIES
The NTU Library has the open shelve system. Users/readers have open access to the
library material. Full access on Internet facility at Library Computers is available there in library.
Certain Priority is given to the students, faculty members and staff pursuing research. The
experienced staff is available to guide the users. Information about the use of library is available
at circulation desk.
COLLECTION
The NTU library has more than 20,000 (twenty thousand )titles of different subjects
including spinning, weaving, knitting, processing, garments, polymer, mechanical engineering,
electrical engineering, physics, dying printing, chemistry, management, marketing, computer
sciences, fashion designing, Islamic and Urdu literature, etc. It has a big collection of rare and
reference books in print format as well. It is substance mentioning that the collection of NTU
Library is unique and value added in the country.
NTU Library is equipped with electronic resources as well.it has more than 704
Electronic and Audio-Visual resources in the form of CDS/Diskettes/ Videos in its stock. The
authentic user may consult these resources at any time.
ORGANIZATION OF MATERIALS
Library World software is being used for automation of material.
Dewey Decimal classification scheme is being used for the classification of books.
Sears List of Subject Heading is being used to assign subject heading
VARIOUS SECTIONS AND DUTIES
ACQUISITION SECTION
This section is concerned with the selection and purchase of reading material in what so
ever from it may be. Books are accessioned in this section. It keeps a complete and up-to-date
record of such books and other reading materials.
Books are purchased keeping in view the requirements of the University Faculty, the
Students. Books are generally selected from the local as well as foreign publishers catalogues,
current lists and local book exhibitions/fairs, etc. These catalogues and lists are sent to the Heads
of the concerned teaching departments for selection and approval of the reading material of their
subjects. They select and approve the reading material for addition to the main library from these
lists. After getting their approval, the titles approved are thoroughly checked with the library
catalogue to avoid duplication. This section is successfully handling the all acquisition
operations and this section also use the technology of internet for the acquisition of regarding
materials.
I learnt following things in this section:
l learnt in this section how to make an order form of reading material, billing and
damages ,accessioning of the reading material
I prepared the list of books to be purchased for the library on the computer after
scrutinized of available stock in all possible sources.
I have checked the duplication of recommended books through OPAC.
I searched the publishers through website for their latest edition of the books to be
purchased.
. I prepare the different files containing deferent venders.
I check the prices through different links like website and all other possible sources.
I learnt in this section how to check the websites of vendors and publishers to check the
latest edition available in the market to provide the beneficiaries to students.
Stamping the books pages according to the internal rules of library, this stamp shows
that the books are property of NTU Faisalabad.
TECHNICAL SECTION
After the process of purchasing, accessioning and labeling of the reading material in the
Acquisition division, it is being forwarded to the technical division for technical processing.
Main responsibility of this section is to classify and catalogue the reading material. The reading
material is being classified according to Dewey Decimal Classification Scheme. Sears list of
Subject Headings is being used for assigning subject headings.
I have learnt followings in this section:
I have done the number building of books using D.D.C.
I learnt I prepared the date slip of the books.
I learnt how to assign subject headings.
I prepared book cards and pasted book pockets on books.
I learnt how to pasted spines on books.
I learnt how to stamping the books pages according to the internal rules of library.
AUTOMATION UNIT
In view of the vital role of automated system in the Libraries of modern age, it was
genuinely felt that a suitable system be acquired for automation purpose. The library has started
working on CDS/ISIS system specifically prepared by UNESCO. Library Word software is
being used in the library. It is a matter of great satisfaction that the system has shown
commendable results and the library users have widely appreciated it. The retrieval functions of
the system have been particularly useful in getting the desired material within the shortest
possible time.
CIRCULATION SECTION
The Circulation Section is the backbone of the Library. Teachers/students from University
come here for enlightenment. It can be said that this section has a unique role for providing the
latest information to readers.
I learnt following things in the section:
I learned how to issue membership card to the students.
I have done the shelving of the books which are return by the users according to
their relevant shelves.
I learnt to make a reminder for the students and faculty members to the return the books
which are over due and not returned by them , or not extended their dates. I also prepared
the record of overdue books of the library.
Borrowing Privileges:
Students Can borrow three books for 21 days
Staff Members Can borrow three books for 21 days
Teaching Assistant Can borrow five books for 21 days
Research Associate Can borrow five books for 21 days
Faculty Can borrow fifteen books for a semester or 90 days
Corporate Members Can borrow three books for 21 days
Borrowing facility is not available to NTU Alumni and students referred from other institutions;
however other library services are available accordingly.
Some materials, such as reference books, press clippings, CD-ROMs, current periodicals, or any
other publication marked, as reference/ reserved will not be circulated.
Fine Policy:
Students, Staff etc. incur fines as follows:
Overdue books
Rs.5/-per book per day
Lost Books
In case of loss or damage, three-time cost of the actual price will be charged.
Reserve Material
This material is issued for three hours, 24 hours, only. A fine Rs. 10/- per each extra
hour/day will be charged.
Theft
The willful damage or theft of library materials will result in an automatic referral to the
university administration and may lead to suspension from the University. Users are required
to pay fines and fees at the accounts department while library will not deal in any cash
transaction.
REFERENCE SECTION
The reference section is a separate entity and holds about 1200 precious reference tools,
including encyclopedias, dictionaries, biographical dictionaries, year books, hand books,
almanacs, directories, atlases, gazetteers, indexes, quotation books, bibliographies, accession
lists, guides, maps, etc. Its function is to answer the readers reference questions and to keep a
record of the reference questions asked and answered. It provides reference service to fulfill the
information needs of the teachers, the students and the researchers. It also answers the questions
like who is who, what is what, how and where etc. to save the precious time of the users.
This section has developed online resources to facilitate the users. These electronic formats
provide numerous contacts/links on general/reference, magazines and serials newspapers,
books/online books, web searching about every academic discipline.
I learnt followings in this section:
I guided users to their concerned material.
I answered the reference questions of users.
I guide the users how to use OPAC.
PERIODICALS, NEWSPAPERS AND MAGAZINES
The periodicals having good repute are available in printable format and downable
format. Efforts are being made for regular subscriptions of most renowned periodicals from
popular organization. Newspapers and magazines are very important for providing current
information regarding international affairs as well as domestic affairs. 4 English (Dawn, The
Nation, The News and Business Recorder) and 3-Urdu (Express ,Jang and Naw-e-Waqt) are
available in library to facilitate the students.
Virtual Library
National Textile Universitys Virtual Library pages contain categorized links to the
web sites of Textile and General Media, Product Sourcing/ Trade Associations, Research
Centers/ Institutes, Universities/ Colleges, Trade Directories, Computer and Technology for
Textiles, Periodicals Publications and other useful general sources of information.
Digital Library
National Textile University Library has recently subscribed more than 11,600 peer
reviewed leading international journals and 40,000 Online books available through National
Digital Library Program of Higher Education Commission, Islamabad. Users can
browse, search and link to find the exact information looking for, fast. These journals are
available through world's renowned Publishers having different databases on Sciences,
Technology, Social science and humanities.
CONCLUSION
In the period of my internship I have done my duties in different sections of the library
and I learned about acquiring, technical processing, classification, cataloging, book shelving, and
how to handle reference queries, Circulation services etc. I also enjoy during the internship and
tried my best to learn about the different activities which are performed in the library. Beside all
this I have learned the most important thing strong management skills and right decision making
power and its implementation. All library functions are automated. According to my own
opinion the function of circulation section should also be perform in very efficient way. NTU
Library is well equipped with modern state of art systems and services, providing excellent
services to their community.
