TECHNIQUE
Plate Spinning

Plate Spinning instructions:

Let the plate hang on the stick by the rim of the base
Start with a gentle rotation (in whatever direction feels most comfortable)
Speed up the spin, this should be coming from your wrist
Once the plate is spinning around quickly freeze your hand and wrist and point the stick
to the middle of the plate
If the stick is held too tightly, the plate will loop around the stick

Tricks you can try:

Throws and catches

Pass under the leg
Curls
Spin on finger
Stick Balances
Pass to a partner
Multiple plate spinning

5
Diabolo

How to get the Diabolo spinning:

Position the Diabolo on the floor over the string

Roll it across the floor away from your spinning hand (usually your dominant hand)
Lift up off ground
Maintain spin by moving dominant hand up and down, you may move other hand to assist, but
this is not necessary whatever feels most comfortable
If your Diabolo begins to tilt to a side move your dominant hand towards or away from you
depending on what way it tilts

Tossing the Diabolo:

Lift the sticks to above waist height, between there and shoulders is ideal
Pull the string tight to propel Diabolo into the air be careful to not be too snappy on this as it
can break the string
The faster you straighten the string the higher the Diabolo will go
Hold sticks above your head with string still tight with your dominant hand slightly higher
As the Diabolo hits the string release the tension and resume spinning

6
Tricks you can try:

Toss and bounce Rebound

Cats cradle
Over the leg/arm
Climbing the string
Stick tricks
Around the world

Juggling

Tips for juggling success:

Imagine a microphone in front of you, at or

about eye level
Toss under the microphone with each throw
Catch on the outside and scoop under the
microphone from the outside to the centre
Catch the ball like an egg, cushioning the
catch
You want movements with balls and throws
to be smooth
Imagine a wall directly in front of you, so all
throws are upwards not forwards
Understand the movement pattern
Practice

Two ball juggling:

With a ball in each hand first throw one

Throw second ball once first peaks
If you throw in correct paths and timing balls will not collide
At first do not worry about catching balls, focus on accurate
throws and getting rhythm
Once you have mastered an accurate and consistent toss
with each hand work on catching with either hand
If you can master this you are ready for the 3 ball cascade

8
3 ball cascade:

Hold two balls in one hand and one in the

other
The order that you will throw each ball is
indicated in the picture (a)
Throw ball 1 in the air
Once ball 1 reaches its apex throw ball 2
Once ball 2 hits its apex throw ball 3
Focus on the timing and accuracy of these
throws before you start catching the balls
Once you feel you have the order of throws
start catching the balls
Apart from the split second you have between throwing and catching you should
only ever have one ball in your hand
With the three ball cascade you will always be throwing and catching with alternate
hands
Be careful not to reach up and catch, when you catch your hands should be at the
same height of your throws

9
Tricks you can try:

Reverse cascade
Columns
Yo-yo
Under the leg
Over the shoulder
Body bounces

Psychology Mental Factors
Confidence is a persons belief in themselves to complete a task

People that perform skills with high levels of confidence are more likely to be
positive/negative about what they are doing and often tend to have a
lesser/better level of success. People with low confidence tend to have a
positive/negative mindset about what they are doing, doubt their ability to
perform the task, and often experience more/less success as a result.

Control of factors that affect confidence

Place the following factors into the categories in the table below:
Level of ability, Weather, Crowd, Knowledge of the activity, Last practice,
Opposition, Equipment, Venue

Memories of bad times spur enough for Wallabies
When Wallaby No. 8 Toutai Kefu tangles with the All Blacks he uses a memory bank of the bad times
to allay any over-confidence.

The 39 test veteran agrees that he and his team-mates are self-assured facing the old foe in Sydney
tomorrow night because of six victories in their last eight meetings, and the knowledge they have of the
opposition through the Super 12 and Tri-Nations.

You get familiarity with their patterns and the way they play he said.

But I always remind myself when I play against them that four or five years ago it was not so rosy.

Its an extra motivation to do well against the All Blacks and I am pretty sure most of the boys have
been around during the leaner times in 1995, 1996 and into 1997.

And once you get into the high periods like we have been in the last couple of years, it is important to
milk it for as long as possible, because for every high there comes a low and that could arrive at any
time.

His consistency was a crucial part of the Wallabies ability to confront larger, more physical packs.

At Carisbrook this month, the Wallabies reversed the history sheets and took another All Black scalp.
Kefu thinks he can pinpoint the main reason.

We probably have had the wood on them, but I think in the last game in Dunedin they might have gone
into the game a bit over-confident he said.

Especially with their win over South Africa and our loss to South Africa.

So, I think there was a big problem for them on that occasion, but with the carrot of the Tri-Nations
dangling, I fully expect this to be a really hard clash.

Did this years variable results indicate a much harder Tri-Nations or did the Wallabies find the All
Blacks easier to play then the Springboks?

Kefu found some substance in both theories.

Scores had been close in most Tri-Nations games, indicating the difficulty in each test. Teams were
winning with their defence, a ploy the Wallabies had been using for several seasons.

The All Blacks had more skill and usually a more flexible game-plan, but they tended to rely on
individual brilliance more than teamwork.

There would be much made in the public about the Wallabies playing for their retiring captain John
Eales, but as a leader he just emphasized what the team had to do to win the test and retain the Tri-
Nations trophy.

It was a reflection of the man and his style unflustered, cool and calm a skipper with strong
communication skills who always put the team before personal honour. 16
Arousal

All athletic performers have an optimal level of arousal (anxiety), a level where peak
performance is possible. Too little or too much arousal can negatively affect performance.

How can we increase arousal/anxiety? How can be decrease arousal/anxiety?

Choose once circus activity to perform, practice for a period of 5 minutes then complete
all boxes on pg 173 of Blue Book except box at the bottom.
Implement your strategies in further practice then reflect in bottom box
