Aspectual Affixes in Bisaya Verbs

NOTE: Verbs which have a perfective (recent) aspect denote action or state that has begun and
completed. While those on the imperfective (begun) aspect denote or state that either begun but
not completed or has not begun at all.

ma Matulog na ang bata. The child will sleep.


naka Nakatulog ang bata. The child had slept.
na Natulog ang bata The child is sleeping.

mo Mokaon ko. I will eat.


nag Nagkaon ko. I am eating.
mi Mikaon ko. I had eaten.

mag Maghulat ko. I will wait.


nag Naghulat ko. I am waiting.
nag Naghulat ko og usa ka I had waited for an
oras. hour.

-an Hatagan niya. He will give.


gina-.. -an Ginahatagan niya. He had been giving.
gi- ... -an Gihatagan niya ug He gave him money.
kwarta.

-on Lutoon niya. He will cook it.


gina- Ginaluto niya. He is cooking it.
gi Giluto niya He cooked it.

i- Itaod niya. He will install it.


gina- Ginataod niya. He is installing it.
gi- Gitaod niya. He installed it.

mang- Manglaba siya. She will wash her


clothes.
nang-/nagpang- Nanglaba siya. She is washing her
clothes.
nang- Nanglaba siya She washed her
gahapon. clothes yesterday.
Aspectual Affixes in Bisaya Verbs

For rough translations you can map the Cebuano aspects to the English tense as:

Perfective aspect: Past tense

Begun aspect: Present tense

Not Begun aspect: Future tense
