ThisengineusedcarburetorsinsteadoftheNissanECCSfuelinjection
system.ItisabletorevhigherthantheRB25DE/DET(asithasthe

torqueatlowerrpmthanthepreviousmodel.From1995,(Series2
Engines)boththeRB25DEandRB25DEThadarevisedelectrical
systemandtheturbochargerontheRB25DET(S2)hadaceramic
compressorwheelratherthanaluminium.Themostobvious
changetothesystemwastheintroductionofignitioncoilswith
builtinignitors,thereforethecoilignitorthatwasonprevious
modelswasnotused.Otherchangeswere,differentairflowmeter,
engineECU,camanglesensorandthrottlepositionsensor.
MechanicallySeries1andSeries2areverysimilar,theonly 1998NEORB25DET
mechanicaldifferencewouldbethecamshaftsastheSeries2Cam
AngleSensor'sshaftthatgoesintotheexhaustcamisslightly
different.Thisisveryimportantnottomistake.(earlySeries2featuredthetraditionalMitsubishiCASwhich
waslaterswappedfortheBlackCASbecauseofapositioningtoothwhichoccasionallybrokeoff)

InMay1998aNEOheadwasfitted,whichenabledtheenginetobeclassifiedasalowemissionvehicle(LEV)
engineduetotheirlowerfuelconsumptionandemissionoutput.TheNEOheadfeaturedsolidliftersrather
thanhydraulic,revisedcamshafts,withon/offsolenoidVariableVCT,usedahotter82Cthermostat,model
specificcoilpacksandarevisedinletmanifold(therunnerdiameterisreducedfrom50mmto45mmto
increaseairvelocityandlowendtorque)inparticulartheRB25DENEOwhichhadtwoinletsgoingintothe
inletmanifold.ThecombustionchamberoftheheadissmallersoGTRspecconnectingrodsareusedto

RB26iswidelyknownandbecamequitepopularforitsstrengthand
powerpotential,makingitamodificationfriendlyplatformfortuners

throughtheprocessofdesigningtheR32GTRtobeaGroupAracecar.Butwhentheengineersaddedthe
AWDsystem,theyfounditmadethecarheavierthanexpectedandasaresult,muchlesscompetitive.Nismo
madethedecisiontomaketheenginea2.6Ltwinturbo,andcompeteinthehigher4500ccclass,resultingin

TheRB26DETTN1isamodifiedversionoftheRB26DETTengine,developedbyNismo(Nissan
Motorsports)forGroupAandGroupNmotorsport.NismofoundthatthestandardRB26DETTenginerequired
toomuchmaintenanceforuseinaGroupAorGroupNracecarandsubsequentlydesignedtheN1block.This
wasfirstusedinBathurstAustralia.Nismobalancedthecrankshafttoahigherspecificationthanstock,asthe
RB26DETTengineexperiencesvibrationsbetween7000and8000rpm.Theenginealsoreceivedimproved
waterandoilchannelswithintheengineblock.Thepistonsandtoppistonringswerealsoupgradedto1.2mm.
TheN1enginealsohasupgradedcamshaftsandupgradedturbochargers.

AlthoughallversionsoftheRB26DETTN1engineuseGarrettT25turbochargers,thespecificationofthe
turbochargerschangedthroughthe3generationsoftheRB26DETTN1engine(R32,R33,andR34).TheR32,
andR33versionsusedJournalBearingT25Turbochargers.TheR34RB26DETTN1engineusedGarrettGT25
turbochargers(whichuseasetofballbearings).

ThebiggestdifferencebetweentheturbochargersusedintheN1engine,andthestandardRB26DETTengine,
isthattheturbinewheelsintheturbochargeraremadefromsteel,ratherthantheceramicusedforthestandard
RB26DETTturbochargers.Theceramicturbinewheelsarefoundtobeveryunreliablewhenusedathigh
rotationalspeedsinducinghighercentrifugalforces(suchaswhentheturbochargersareusedatahigherboost
pressurethanstock).Withtheadvancesinmanufacturingtechnologysuchassealingandmaterialprocesses.
TheN1engineistheoreticallysaidthatwhenfuelandboostlevelsaremodified,itisabletoproduce(and
handle)inexcessof800bhpwithoutanymodificationtotheengineblockorrotatingassembly.

TheNismoRB26DETTN1engineblockusesan86mmborewhichcanbeboreduptoeither87mmor
88mm.TheN1blockiscastwithanidentificationmarkof24U,whereasthestandardRB26DETTblockis
markedwith05U.TheRB26DETTN1blockiscompatiblewithallGTRenginebays.

provedtobeveryreliableapartfromthisissue.TheRB30SwasfoundinsomeMiddleEasternR31Skylines
andinsomeNissanPatrols.TheRB30EwasfoundinR31SkylinesandVLCommodoresinAustraliaaswell
asinSouthAfricanR31Skylines(with126kWat5,000rpmand260Nmat3,500rpm)

TheturbochargedRB30ET(producing150kW)wasfoundonlyintheVLCommodoreandconsistedofa
lowercompressionRB30Ebottomend,morepowerfuloilpump,T3Garrettturbocharger,250ccinjectorsand
adifferentintakemanifold.ThemotoritselfisstillpopulartodayinAustralianandNewZealandmotorsport

astheRB25/30orRB26/30)usesanRB30Ebottomendmatedtoa
RB25DE,RB25DETorRB26DETTcylinderheadandturbo(RB20DEand
DETheadsarenotusedastheboresaredifferentinsizeRB3086.0mm
RB2078.0mmbutwereoriginallymodifiedandusedontheTommyKaira
RB30DEastheRB25enginedidnotexist).TheRB25DEcylinderhead
fromtheA31CefiroC33LaurelorR32skyline(aka:NonVCT)canbe
used.TheRB25DET(fromtheR33SkylineorC34LaurelorStagea)head
isalsoused,howeveranexternaloilfeedmustbefabricatedforthe
variablecamtiming(VCT)ontheRB25DET,andtheoilgalleriesatthe

ThefitmentofatwincamheadfromanyoftheseenginesontoastandardcompressionRB30Ebottomend
givesanidealcompressionratio,(around8.2:1),foramildtomoderatelymodifiedstreetturboengine,making
theconversionpopularamongstthosewhowouldotherwiseconverttheirRB30Etoahighcompression
RB30ETusingoriginalETboltonexternals.

AlthoughithasalargerdisplacementthantheRB26DETT,maximumpossiblehorsepowerisless,astheRB30
blocklackstheRB26block'sinternalbracing,andconsequentlycannotrevashighduetoharmonicissuesat

TheRBXGT2(designedandbuiltbyREINIK)isanenginespeciallymadefortheNISMO400R.The
differencebetweenthisengineandaRB26DETTisthattheengineisboredandstroked(87.077.7mm)
whichresultsin2771cc.Engineproduces450PS(331kWor443HP)at6800rpmand47.8kgfm(469Nm
or347lbft)at4400rpm.[10]

Thisenginewasmanufacturedwithareinforcedcylinderblockandcylinderhead,metalheadgasket,pistons
withcoolingchannels,forgedcrankshaft,forgedconnectingrods,N1turbinewithreinforcedactuator,high
flowaircleaner,stainlessdownpipe,andlowairresistancesportcatalyzer,mostofwhichwerenotofferedfor
theRB26DETT.RBXGT2enginescompetedinLeMans24hrrace,PikesPeak,andotherformsof
motorsports.GT500andZtuneenginesarealsobasedonREINIK'sdesignalthoughlaterbuiltbyNISMO's

REINIKalsomadeover20RB28DETbasedontheR33RB25DET.TheseengineswereorderedbyPrince
NissanDealershipnetworkforaspecialeditionR33GT25tcalled280TypeMR.Theenginewasbuiltforhigh
torqueandlimitedto300PS(295hp)and261lb.ftoftorque.
