PLANNING A TRIP
You are going to plan a trip using various internet resources and Microsoft applications. For the
purpose of the directions, I will use the city of Fort Worth as my travel city. You have a $3,000
budget.
1. We need to select a location to visit. To begin,
visit Frommer’s travel page
www.frommers.com/destinations/usa/ . Scroll
through the page. You can look at “Regions in
USA,” “States,” or an extensive list of “Cities.”
You can look at as many cities as you would like
but you will only be able to select one to travel
too.
a. Click on a city name (i.e. Fort Worth)
b. Click on “Introduction” under Complete Guide to “your city name (Fort Worth)”
c. This page has information you will need for step 5, research your city.
d. Look around the website and see if this is the place you want to go to. If not,
repeat the process.
2. Enter choice of travel destination Click here to enter text.
3. Select your travel dates (1 weeks). It doesn’t matter when your dates are as long as they
are in the next couple of months. To find your dates use a search engine of your choice
and search for “online calendar.”
4. Enter travel dates Click here to enter text.
5. Research your city.
a. Return to Frommer’s travel page
www.frommers.com/destinations/usa/
b. Click on your city name again.
c. You need to gather information about your city. Click on
“Introduction.”
d. Copy and paste all text into Microsoft Word.
e. Cite your source using www.citationmachine.net . Click on
“MLA” on the right. Then click on “Web Document” under non-
print.
f. Fill in the information requested.
i. Title of Web Page (i.e.

ii. Title of the Web Site
iii. Date Published or Last Revised
(scroll to the bottom and look for
the copyright date)
iv. Publishing Organization (will be
listed next to the copyright date)
v. Date Retrieved (will
automatically fill in with today’s
date)

g. Save your Word document to your X:\
drive.
6. Things to Do
a. On the Introduction page to your city found on the
Frommer’s website, click on the link on the left side of
the window that says “Your city name (Fort Worth)
Attractions.”
b. Click on an attraction to find out what it is and to get
information to complete the next step.
c. Complete the “Things to Do” worksheet. Enter only the
attractions you would want to visit. You do not need to
fill every blank because there are more things you will
enter in the next couple of steps.
d. On the left side of the window click on “Your city (Fort
Worth) Events”
e. Are there any events going on during the time you plan
on traveling that you would like to do? If so, enter the information on the
“Things to Do” worksheet.
f. On the left side of the window click on “Spectator Sports”
g. Are there any events during the time you plan on traveling that you would like to
do? If so, enter the information on the “Things to Do” worksheet. Make sure to
save your worksheet to your X:\ drive.
7. Restaurants
a. On the left side of the window click on “Your city (Fort Worth) Restaurants”
b. Look through the list of restaurants and find some that look good (look under the
heading Cuisine Type to see what type of food they serve).
c. Click on a restaurant to find information to fill out the “Restaurant Worksheet” .
Make sure to save the worksheet to your X:\ drive.
8. Excel Spreadsheet
a. You need to create an Excel spreadsheet that you can keep track and manage
your expenses for your trip. The following number of steps will all be entered in
your spreadsheet.
i. Open the template “Planning a Trip – Excel Spreadsheet”
ii. Recreate the spreadsheet in Excel
iii. Enter the following formulas
1. C25 =SUM(C3:C23)
2. Copy the formula from C25 and paste it into D25, E25, and F25
3. C27 =SUM(C25:F25)
b. Make sure to save your spreadsheet to your X:\ drive.
9. Airline Reservations
a. Go to Travelocity at http://www.travelocity.com/
b. On the first screen under the “Book My Trip” tab fill in the appropriate
information.
i. “Save with Packages” – choose flight & hotel
ii. “Pick a Location” – in the From box type Omaha and in the To box type
your city. If it gives you will have to select the city from a list (there must
be more than one and it is trying to select the correct one).
iii. “Date” – search by either “Exact Dates” or “+/- One to Three Days”. If you
do exact dates they will be the ones you enter. If you do the other option
if will find the best fit.
iv. “Add Traveler Info…” – you will have 2 adults
v. Click “Search
c. Your results page –
i. The flight plans that come up will be the best fit. If you want something
else you will need to click
ii. Now you need to browse through the hotels and find the one that best
fits your needs. You need to consider how close it is to the other things
you want to do because it may cost you more travel if you are 20 minutes
away from everything.
d. Making your selection – click “Select” on the one you want. You have a $3,000
budget for the entire trip.
e. Screen Capture
i. We need to save a copy of this for your project.
ii. On your keyboard find the key the “Print Screen – Sys Rq” button
iii. Press the button. Nothing will appear to happen.
iv. Now open a new Word document and press Control V
v. Your picture should have inserted into the document.
vi. Save the document as Flight and Hotel Bill in your X:\ drive.
10. Car Rental - You have a $3,000 budget for the entire trip.
a. Decide if you want to rent a car or use a taxi.
b. If using a taxi, what is the cost in your city?
i. Go to “Planning a Trip” – then select “Getting Around”
c. If renting a car, do the following
i. Go to www.hertz.com
ii. Click the “Search Major Airports Only” box to find a car rental at the
airport you are flying into. When you type in the name of your city a little
box may come up and you will have to select the appropriate airport.
iii. Enter the pick-up date as the day you arrive in your city and the return
date as the day you are leaving. Make sure to select the correct time (you
can’t pick it up before your flight arrives or drop-it off after your flight
leaves).
vii. You will either get a list to choose from or a message that there is not a
rental location at the airport itself. If you get the second message just
click the “Select for Reservation” button.
viii. Select the car from the list you want. Remember, you are working on a
budget so you can’t get the flashiest car available. Click the “Pay Now”
button to get a lower price.
ix. A pop-up box will appear, click “Continue with Pay Now Option”
x. Click on “view details” to get an expanded view.
xi. Take a screen shot like you did in step 9e and paste it into a new Word
documents. Save as Car Rental to your X:\ drive.
11. Planning your days
a. Using Microsoft Word, type out a daily schedule. You need to pick what activities
you are doing and what restaurants you are eating at. Remember, your hotel
probably has some type of breakfast for free but you will need to plan lunch and
supper. See “Daily Schedule” for an example.
b. Figure out your travel time. Using Google Maps, you must find out how far it is
from each location you are planning in your day to make sure you have enough
travel time. Also, are you renting a car or taking a taxi?
c. Make sure to save your document to your X:\ drive.
12. Brochure
a. Remember the information you found earlier on your city, now you are going to
use that information to create a brochure.
b. Read through your information and find anything you think is important to
include in a brochure about your city. Highlight this information.
c. Delete the other information you are not going to use.
d. In order to use any of this information you will have to reword it so you aren’t
breaking copyright laws (you will still need to cite the source though).
e. Open up Publisher and create a brochure.
f. See “Welcome to Rome, Italy” as a guideline for your brochure.
g. Do whatever you would like to your brochure but make sure to use the same
type of information used in the example.
h. Make sure to cite your source on the back page of your brochure (the back page
is the first page, center column).
i. If you use a picture, it must be public domain or clip art.
j. Save your brochure to your X:\ drive.
k. Now we need to make a JPEG (picture of your brochure).
i. Click “File”
ii. Choose “Save As”
iii. Click “Save as type”
iv. Scroll down to “JPEG File Interchange Format”
v. Click “Save”
vi. Repeat this same process for the second page of your brochure (make
sure to change the file name or else you will replace the picture you just
made).
13. Assemble everything for a presentation.
