Observation-Report 7th and 1st

The student teacher observed two classes - a 7th grade class and a 1st year high school class. [1] The classes took place in a four level school building with about 1,000 total students. The high school teaches 12 grades and students choose a technical specialty in their last two years. [2] Both classrooms had over 30 students and were equipped with projectors, but many whiteboards were broken. The 7th grade teacher used communicative approaches while the 1st year teacher relied more on lecture and drill/practice. [3] About half the students in each class seemed motivated and engaged, while the other half expected easy work and got frustrated easily. Classroom management focused

OBSERVATION STAGE

Name of student teacher: Esteban Ariel Nuez Gonzalez

Name of school: Liceo Tecnico Profesional Mara Luisa Bombal

Number of students:

Date: 29/08/2017 Class: Primero medio C y sptimo bsico.

Task 1: The School

a) In 10 lines describe the general background of the school including the physical
location, organisation, student population, philosophy and educational and
behavioural policies.
The high school is placed in Gran Bretaa street #851 and is a four level building with two
floors on each level. The student population is near the thousand students in total. The
high school teaches in 12 grades in total and when the students are in the last two years
they are asked to choose a technical speciality (culinary, hotel industry or turism). When
this happens, their education will be inclined towards the speciality chosen. Because of
this, the teaching of English in higher levels is strongly based on their field.

Task 2: The classroom

A. Physical environment

In no more than 10 lines describe the atmosphere of the room and the levels of
engagement in the room. Make notes on seating, sight lines, space, air, light, whiteboard,
equipment, etc. Draw a rough sketch of class arrangement (teachers desk, students
desks)
The classrooms are big enough to fit more than 30 students, and are equipped with wall
journals and slide projectors. The arrangement of the chairs in the classrooms are classic,
three rows of fourteen or so seats each one. There are plenty of windows to let air and
light in.
Even though theres a whiteboard in each classrooms, there are no erasers ( most of them
are broken).

B. The lesson

Balance of teacher and student doing things x Most of the time,

Closing the lesson ( summarizing, stating x The students of the
objectives again) 1st grade always get
ready to leave the
classroom too early,
and the teacher
most of the time
doesnt summarizes
the classes.

my surprise,neither
of the teachers did
this.

Explained to the students? x x The teacher always
writes and explain
the objective in the
beginning of each
class clearly.
Lesson on students level? x x In the 7th grade the
teacher often uses
and reformulate
activities from a
higher level (8th

Length of lesson appropriate? x x From my point of
view, having just
one hour of class
(45 minutes on
Wednesday and
Thursday, is not
enough to finish
the daily activity,
and if these days
are for finishing
the activities from
the Monday or
Tuesday, most of
the students
forget to bring
their work done or
even, to bring their
notebooks.

F. Classroom management

Description
Taking attendance A few times the attendance is taken.
When observed, the attendance is
answered with a present. In both 7th
grade and 1st grade.
Arranging the desks The seating arrangement in both grades
were the same.
Creating rules This part is weak, the students make a lot
of use of their cell phones and the rules
are almost entirely a matter of respect to
the teacher in both classes.
Discipline: Determining consequences When the teacher finds it reasonable, if a
student is getting too disrespectful with
him or with another student, he is asked
to leave the classroom and go to the
overseer.

Task 3: Student learning

In this second observation task, you should focus on the things that help to create
conditions for effective learning and on the aspects that play a part in preventing
learning.

1. The learners
Explain in no more than 10 lines how motivated the learners are, to what extent
they are taking part in their own learning and to what extent they are expecting
the teacher to do the work for them.

I would say that its a 50% of the students in the classrooms that are not interested
in learning. This half of the group expects everything easy and to be given in a tray,
and if not, they get easily frustrated. The other half of the students do well in the
activities and put effort in doing them.

2. Behaviour during classroom activities

Describe the way students are encouraged to participate in activities. Are there
any particular strategies for managing issues and motivating students? Are there
any students with special needs?
Students are constantly asked to do things and tasks in the class time, but if they
dont deny to do them, they start to do anything else, for instance, check their cell
phones, listen to music, etc. There are no students with special needs in the
classroom.

3. Learning styles and levels of English in the classroom.

Discuss very briefly what you have observed.
The levels of English are in general pretty low, the teacher has to make use of the code
switching technique in order for them to understand. Ive noticed some students tend
to be better when reading than others, and also noticed that some students like to
answer more frequently to the teachers questions.
