1.) What do you imagine the book is about?
THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA
I imagine that is the history of a fisherman, according to the title is an old man, I also imagine that the story
is about the sea, fishing and that leaves any type of education around the book.
2.) Do some research about the authors life and write of his biggest achievements as a writer, where he was
born, what year he was born, any other books he wrote and his writing style.
Ernest Hemingway is the author of the old man and the sea
He was one of the most important novelist in XX century. His most important novels were writing by him
from 1920 to 1950, he won PULITZER PRIZE in 1953 for the old man and the sea, the next year he won THE
NOBEL PRIZE IN LITERATURE those were his biggest achievements as a writer.
He was born in Oak Park EE.UU in 1899.
His selected list of works includes Indian camp (1924), the sun also rises (1926), a farewall to arms (1929),
death in the afternoon (1932), green hills of Africa (1935), for whom the bell toils (1940) and also the old
man and the sea (1951)
He was a novelist; his writing style was around short stories, minimalist, with necessary words and
descriptive, he believed that the reader must see what is not visible under the words.

Research the following information before and after reading the book.
1. Information about the book
Title of the Book: THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA

Ernest Hemingway was a storyteller, he was born in Oak Park in 1899, he was a volunteer in World War I but
he was seriously injured. He moved to Paris and there he met important people like Pablo Picasso, also in
World War II and Spanish Civil War he was correspondent. Those stories were included in his stories. He was
also a journalist thats why he traveled a lot. He was one of the most important writers during the wars. He
had four wives and three children.
He survived anthrax, malaria, pneumonia, dysentery, skin cancer, hepatitis, anemia, diabetes, high blood
pressure, a damaged kidney, spleen rupture, damaged liver, a crushed vertebra, a broken skull, shrapnel
wounds of mortar, three automobile accidents and burns in forest fires.
In the end of his life, he suffered mental problems; he killed himself of a shotgun shot at his Ketchum
residence on July 2, 1961. He had been discharged only five days at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota,
where he had been treated.
His most important achievements were:

2. Talk about the time in which the book was written... what kind of events were important.... How those
events help to the creation of the book...
The book was written in a unknown time, but people say that for the reference of Joe DiMaggio it could be
written in 1951 time
In the book is always important day, afternoon, nights and sunrises. The duration of the story is 4 day, in the
story the old man takes 84 days without fishing.
3. What kind of events are present in the book and are similar to the ones that the author lived.
The only event that is similar is the way the old man lived, he lived in the beach near the sea, and that is the
way the author lived and wrote, he used to live in La Florida and Cuba .

Give your opinion about the book, you must answer these questions:
1. What did you think of the book?
I think that it is a book that leaves many educations, it is a history simple and easy
to understand, it is much detailed by what is easy to imagine each of the
characters. I like the message that leaves the book.
2. What did you like about the book?
I like the place where the history develops, I like very much the friendship
that santiago has with manolin, the message of being always constant and have hope, I like that it is simple
to read, it does not have words difficult to understand
3. What did you not like about the book?
I did not like the end, I would have liked seeing
santiago returning of his trip with the fish, because the fight for the fish was strong.
4. Was the story confusing or hard to believe?
it is difficult to believe that the fish was so big. In the book they describe the fish as big as a whale
Was the story predictable (could you guess what was going to happen?)
it was predictable that Manolin was going to help Santiago,
even when his parents did not want it , the friendship between them two let the readers guess or
imagine that it is going to happen.
5. Was the story believable?
It is believable that the old man Santiago went to fishing and found a big fish, it is also believable that he had
to fight so much.
6. The ending was
Very different, reader except to see a winner Santiago with his fish, but in the end he came to the beach just
with the head because of the shark, it is a little bit sad but leaves a message of determination and to never
give up

If I were the analyst, I will say it is a good work because you can see a good analysys about the book the old
man and the sea, a good draw, and good conclusions about that.
