ARTS 15976 - INTRO TO PAINTING PROFESSOR:
COLOUR STILL LIFE WITH DRAPERY ELEMENT (15%)
!
!
!Use the following to create a resolved still life painting:
- four or five objects
- a drapery element
- a single consistent light source
- and a full colour palette
FINAL IMAGE:
!
Find four or five related objects, that is, things that come from the same room or
are used for a common activity. Arrange the objects into a pleasing ensemble taking
into consideration hierarchy, proximity, positive and negative space. The painting
should demonstrate good form and volume, overall unity of colour and attention to a
balanced dynamic composition. Consider the role shadows play in the composition.
It is suggested to use a tabletop placed near a wall as your background. Do not in-
vent backgrounds, but paint what is there.
Execute the painting on a sheet of 15 x 20 Illustration Board. The illustration
board may be single weight or double thick. It is available in the bookstore.
!PROCESS:
As part of your preliminary process you will be asked for a minimum four thumbnail
compositional studies. These studies should be of a small size and proportioned to
3:4. Ex. 3x4, 6x8, 4 x 6.
All four should be neatly organized on one sheet of 15 x 20 Mayfair.
Execute these thumbnails in a simple palette of two or three hues and white only.
Use the thumbnails to explore different ways of organizing your objects landscape,
portrait, open/closed, aligned/scattered, close/far, above/below, etc. From the four,
choose the best one as your final. Thumbnails will be worth 5% of the 15%.

!!
DO:
Pay attention to the relative size of objects and their placement. *Note how close or
far apart objects are from each other: how much space is around them. *Paint the
negatives as much as the positives. *Paint the image right to the edge of the board.
*Spend approximately 6 - 10 hours on this painting.
!AVOID:
Using photography to assist you. * Inventing backgrounds. * Painting uninteresting ob-
jects such as electronic devices, or, objects that are just too complex such as lace,
fine jewels, etc.
