1. Course Description:
This advanced level course provides third year students who have interests and talents the opportunity to further
develop their abilities in the use of tools and materials of the professional artist. Students will need to be self-
motivated in studio practices and disciplines. Assignments will require MORE problem-solving skills in design and
composition, propose more of a challenge in creativity and technique, and may require outside of class time to
complete assignments. It is strongly recommended that students enrolled in this class understand that it is taught as a
Pre-AP course or as an alternative to an AP course with high expectations, due dates, and dedication to creating a
high quality art portfolio. Critical thinking, writing, research on artists, culture, and history, and the ability to
analyze and interpret artwork is a fundamental portion of this course.
This course follows a non-traditional approach to teaching and learning as part of Phoenix Union's mission
statement in preparing students for college, career and life. These goals are meet through helping emphasize a series
of 21 Century skills such as; technology in art, critical thinking and problem-solving, self-direction, creativity and
st
innovation, and communication and collaboration.
It is critical for success that students participate DAILY and maintain a good working pace and work ethic in order
to pass this course. Students who are frequently off task, frequently tardy or absent may struggle in completing their
assignments within the deadlines. Therefore, IT IS CRITICAL that students enter this course understanding the
HIGH EXPECTATIONS OF CLASS TIME MANAGEMENT and work ethic!
2. Materials Required: This class requires a $30 fee per semester, $60 for the year. The
st
first payment is due Sept 1 . Students will have limited supply selection until
the fee is paid. This fee covers most supplies the students will need.
Optional Supplies: A Camera, Anything the student uses frequently may
be a supply they would like to purchase on their own: drawing pencils,
charcoals, paints etc. USB memory card.
3. Grading System: 60% Projects (Create)
15% Arty Practice: Brainstorming, thumbnails, notes etc. (Connect)
15% Critiques (Respond)
10% Final (Present)
PROJECTS: All projects will be out of 16 points. These points will be broken down into the following categories:
12 Project score
+ 3 On time .
15 Total
Project score will be consistent with the AP scoring guide.
A scale of: poor-weak-moderate-good-strong-excellent: 2 points per indicator for a total of 12
Projects will be due on their scheduled critique date. All projects will be included in the critique regardless of how
far along they are. Only projects completed 80% or higher on the due date will receive full points in the On Time
category. As long as they are completed by the following critique. Completed projects will also be photographed and
resized for the students portfolio by the teacher following each critique.
Projects 50-80% finished by the critique date have the possibility of receiving half of the on time points as long as they
are turned in by the following 2 critiques.
Projects that have lots of unfinished space will receive a Zero until the student completes it, and they will forfeit the 4
points for being on time.
CRITIQUES & Arty Practice:
We will have critiques in this class about every other Wednesday. On the day of a critique students are
expected to come in and immediately place their work on the whiteboard regardless of how close to being
finished it is. All projects are due on the day of critique. Students will receive points for both
having their artwork and expressing their views throughout the critique. Critiques are a great way open
up dialogue about progress and give and receive feedback. Expect to be critiqued. I will push you.
The fact that you are in this class is a compliment to your artistic abilities. Keep that in mind.
Also critiques can be a great tool in cultivating and collaborating ideas.
Arty Practice will be the brainstorming, thumbnails, sketches, practice techniques, research, and notes that
students will use to develop ideas for final projects. Many of them will be turned in at the same time
as your projects. Photo Contests will also be graded in this category.
Final PORTFOLIO: This will be an accumulation of all the work completed for the semester. Students will create a
portfolio that they will present for the class. Any student that does not submit the Exam Portfolio will not pass this class
without teacher approval.
4. Title I Program: Academic tutoring and test preparation is available to all students. Additional support for
passing classes and graduating on time is the intent of these services. Support through Title I
funding is available in the areas of: math, reading and English. If interested, please contact
the Principal, Mr. Georgia, or Assistant Principal for Instruction, Ms. Delgado, for additional
information at 602-764-4000.
5. Make-up Policy:
All projects can be turned in late. However if late, they will lose the 4 points given for On-Time.
Photo Contests are due by the due date specified. If you are absent, email them.
If a student knows they will be absent for a critique it is their responsibility to turn their work in before.
If a student misses a critique, the critique grade cannot be made up, however if their artwork is
represented, they may only lose half points.
If the student misses a critique unexpectedly they will be expected to turn their work in immediately upon
return.
AP students should be in my classroom every advisory unless they are completely caught up, or have a
more important grade to be working on.
Students should do their very best to keep up with the deadlines. I have created deadlines to help pace
students through this very difficult and fast paced class.
6 Attendance: Absent is defined as nonattendance in an assigned class or activity for more than one-half of the period.
(PUHSD Governing Board Policy J-1561 JHR)
Tardy is defined as not being in the assigned class or activity when the tardy bell has finished ringing.
(PUHSD Governing Board Policy J-1561 JHR)

absences and after school-documented interventions have been exhausted. (Student Procedures Handbook page 22)
7. Rules, Procedures, and Expectations: All school rules are enforced. Food is not allowed in my classroom. Phones & other
electronics are not allowed. Unless by direction of teacher. Each student will be given one bathroom pass per semester to be used wisely. I
expect each student to clean up after themselves and to take good care of any and all supplies.
