KEY	TERMS	
Corrupt	bargain: In the election of 1824 John Quincy Adams,Henry Clay,William H.
Crawford, and Andrew Jackson were running for president, Clay being the top of the
house chose Quincy over Jackson due to personal conflicts.	
Spoils	system: When public officials were changed by putting Democrats (Jacksons
followers which were common folk men) into power (high office placement) and they were
illiterate and unskilled.
Tariff	of	abominations: A increase in tariff which was loved by Yankees because of their
industries which were booming but hated by southerners because they had no industries
just cotton lands which was all their economy.
Nullification	crisis: When a new Tariff was passed in 1832 but was not cutting it for South
Carolina - Columbia Convention was established to talk about this but weeks later it got
void.
Compromise	tariff	of	1833: Henry Clay introduced it and reduced the tariff of 1832 by 10%
and it ended the clash between SC and the Federal government (white house) - it was
supported by SC but not by other southern states.
Force	bill: Andrew Jackson a military man was ready to fight SC for them to listen but
because it did not happen he and congress passed this law stating that force could be
taking to collect tariffs.
Indian	removal	act: Stated that all Indian Tribes should be moved East of the Mississippi
and could keep their native culture there - mostly the 5 civilized tribes had to go.
Trail	of	Tears: When the Indians were moving West to the new established Indian territory
where they would forever free of whites.
Black	Hawk	War: The Indians were defeated by Lieutenant Jefferson Davis and Captain
Abraham Lincoln.
Bank	War: Daniel Webster and Henry Clay presented Congress with a bill to change the
Bank of the United States charter.
Anti-Masonic	party: which were against the Masonic order (men that helped one another
during a secret society and used signed to communicate).	
Pet	banks: Pro - Jackson banks or states banks established by the department of treasury
that gave them federal funds (surplus) when the US bank die out.
Specie	circular: U.S. Treasury said that land should be bought with hard metallic currency
not paper which was seen when a state bank was flooding markets with unreliable paper
money
Panic	of	1837: A World Wide depression that started when one of the US national largest
banks could not pay outstanding debt (bankrupt) and many pet banks + business failed.
Alamo: Fortress in Texas where 400 Americans were killed and Remember Alamo
became a pop cry for independence.
Goliad: Texas outpost where Americans surrendered but were massacres still by Mexicans
with this and Alamo American supported even more troops.
Battle	of	San	Jacinto: Houstons army captured Santa Anna and in 1836 - Texas
Independence won.
PEOPLE	TO	KNOW	
John	Quincy	Adams: Elected president in 1824 with the help of Henry Clay, son of John
Adams.
Andrew	Jackson: Fought bravely in the Battle of Oregon, ran for president but lost due to
Henry Clay being head of the House of Representatives and he hated Jackson but won in
1828 as president.
Denmark	Vesey: Led the slave rebellion in Charleston, South Carolinas.
John	C.	Calhoun: South Carolina men that was a vice presidential candidate for for both
Quincy Adams and Jackson tickets plus wrote the The South Carolina Exposition (see
outline to know what it is).
Black	Hawk: Led the fight of changing their territory in the Black Hawk War.
Nicholas	Biddle: President of the Bank of the United States and held a lot of
unconstitutional power.
Daniel	Webster: Presented the bill along with Henry Clay to change the Banck of the United
States
Henry	Clay: Secretary of State of John Quincy Adams and presented the bill to change the
Bank of the United States.
Martin	Van	Buren: Vice-president of President Jackson and won the 1836 election by 170
to 124 electoral votes and became the 8th president of the United States.
Stephen	Austin: Granted to Mexico that he would bring in 300 American Families into
Texas so they would be Mexicanized and in return be given a large part of Texas.
Sam	Houston: Latecomer leader to Texas that lived there with the Arkansas Indians when
his bride left him he also led the Texans into battle to fight for their independence from
Mexico and won
Santa	Anna: The dictator of Mexico - When Stephen Austin went to talk about slavery in
Texas he immediately sent him to jail for 8 months and then took away rights in Mexico
and raised an army.
William	Henry	Harrison: A Whig and was known for the battle of Tippecanoe.
