What I Can Do For The Environment at The Coasts and Seas: Action: Gavin The Leafy Seadragon

The document provides information on actions individuals can take to help the environment at coastal and marine areas in South Australia. It discusses protecting leafy seadragons and other protected species, responsible fishing practices, maintaining boats to avoid pollution, preventing pollution from entering stormwater drains, staying on paths to avoid disturbing dunes and wildlife, controlling dogs at beaches, reducing litter and recycling, limiting use of off-road vehicles near beaches, and utilizing public transportation to reduce environmental impacts when visiting coastal areas.

What I can do for the environment at the coasts and

seas

Action: Gavin the Leafy Seadragon

Summary
• Gavin, a leafy seadragon is the marine emblem for South Australia
• Leafy and weedy seadragons, seahorses and pipefishes are protected species in South
Australian waters
• The leafy seadragon inhabits rocky reefs, seaweed beds, seagrass meadows and
structures colonised by seaweed
• It is an offence under the South Australian Fisheries Management Act 2007 to remove
protected species

Action: Fishing

Summary
• When fishing, all lines, plastics and packaging materials must be disposed of correctly to
avoid entrapping birds and harming marine life
• Observe fishing catch and size limits set by local authorities

• Fishing and other activities may be prohibiting or restricted in some locations where there
are closures, Aquatic Reserves or Marine Protected Areas
• Protected marine species must not be removed

Action: Boat

Summary
• Regularly service boats to avoid excessive pollutants, emissions and oil leaks
• Consider energy and fuel efficiency when purchasing a boat
• Take care when anchoring, particularly over sensitive reef areas
• In certain areas, specially designed mooring buoys may be installed to enable people to
access the area without having to deploy anchors and damaging habitats
• Decrease boat speed to minimise disturbance to wildlife and erosion from excessive
wave action.

Action: Water Inlets

Summary
• Stormwater from street gutters flows untreated into local waterways and beaches.
• Any litter that floats can end up in rivers or oceans.
• Prevent chemicals and other pollutants entering stormwater drains or gutters.
• Pollution, disturbance and loss of habitat are major threats to the survival of leafy seadragons and seagrass.

Action: Sand Dunes

Summary
• Remaining on designated paths and boardwalks avoids disturbing or trampling on
vegetation and ground dwelling wildlife

Action: Dogs

Summary
• Make sure dogs on the beach are accompanied and on a lead during the times set out
by the local council
• Waste matter from dogs contaminates waterways, make sure that you pick up after your
dog

Action: Recycling

Summary
• Don’t drop litter near the beach where it will be washed into the ocean
• Separate rubbish for recycling whenever possible

Action: Cars

Summary
• Driving off-road recreational vehicles over dunes and beaches can cause erosion
through destruction of vegetation
• Vehicle pressure on the sand causes a loss of air space between grains where tiny
invertebrates live
• Wader birds feeding on these invertebrates will need to leave their habitat to find an
alternative food source

Action: Public Transport

Summary
• When travelling to the beach walk, cycle or use public transport – this reduces
consumption of non-renewable fuels, atmospheric emissions, air and noise pollution
