India's Census and Housing Insights

India is conducting a yearlong census to count its population of over 1.2 billion people. Census takers will visit every home and count people living there as well as millions of homeless people. They will also collect details about housing conditions. Most Indians welcome the census because they believe newly planned national identity cards will make it easier to access government services. The census is India's largest administrative exercise and will help the government decide where to allocate funds.
