entirely residential. There aren't any businesses or offices. All the streets are filled
with beautiful trees and there are three parks near my apartment. The only thing I
don't like is that it isn't quiet on Sunday. It's a popular place to go on Sunday. Families
invade my quiet neighborhood and walk along the streets and have picnics in my
parks. All the rest of the week it's a great place to live.

Ivan: I love the area I live in. I'm just two blocks from the biggest park in the city.
There are five museums and two art galleries in the park. It's crowded on weekends,
but since I work nights, I can visit the park and the museums all week. There aren't
many people there in the week so I feel like it's my own private park. There are also
some great restaurants and clubs near my house. I don't have to take out the car when

Today everyone talks about fusion music. This kind of music is a mixture of different genres
from many places in the world. For example, Bole2Harlem is an Ethiopian-American group
that combines rap and hip-hop with traditional African music.
Cristo de la luz School Teacher: Mara Luz Alpaca Rodrguez

Music fusion isn't new. One of the most loved genres, jazz, developed from the fusion of
both African and European traditions. It was born in the south of the United States and its
roots can be traced back to the slave compounds before the Civil War freed the slaves. When
slaves were brought from Africa in the 18th and 19th century, they brought their beliefs,
traditions, and music with them. They used their music for entertainment and for
community-building. This African music was fused with the European music the slaves heard
from their white masters and the result can be seen in many kinds of music. One type of
music they developed is gospel music that is sung in many African-American churches today
and this was a powerful influence on the growth of jazz.

Jazz developed in the early 20th century in the south of the U.S., but by 1915 it had reached
Chicago in the north. It was there that the term jazz first appeared and jazz entered the
music mainstream, a fusion of African and European traditions.
