SCIENCE KEY WORDS BIOLOGY

Adaptation Plants and animals that have special shapes or parts that help
them to survive in their habitat.
Cell The basic unit that living things are made of.
Classification Sorting living things into groups.

Consumer An organism that has to eat other organisms.
Digestion Process that breaks food into soluble substances in the body

Disease When some processes that happen in the body do not work in
the way they should.
Environment The conditions around an organism caused by physical
environmental factors.
Enzymes Substances that catalyse reactions.

Evolution When animals and plants change over a long period of time.

Homeostasis Control of our internal body environment.

Inheritance How characteristics are passed on from parents to offspring.

Interdependence Relationships between animals and plants within a habitat.

Organ A large part of a plant or animal that does a very important


job. It is made from different tissues.
Photosynthesis The process by which plants absorb light energy and make
their own food.
Physiology The study of how living organisms function.

Populations All organisms of a particular species living within a particular


habitat.
Producer An organism that can make its own food (i.e plants).

Respiration How the body gets energy from glucose (food).

Species Organisms that can reproduce with each other to produce


offspring that will also be able to reproduce.
Tissue A group of the same cells all doing the same job.
Variation The differences between things.
