Assignment 2

The document contains 5 questions related to transportation engineering topics: 1. It asks about the definition of cross wind component and provides a note on basic runway length. 2. It presents trip data between three zones and asks to calculate trip interchange between the zones, given that trips are based on the second power of travel time. 3. It asks about the definition of wind coverage. 4. It asks about the difference between Type I and Type II wind rose diagrams. 5. It provides runway length and airport elevation data and asks to determine the corrected runway length for the given conditions.

Tech (CE) SEM 7 Assignment 2

Advanced Highway and Transportation Engineering
(Answer should be explained with sketches wherever applicable)

1. What do you mean by cross wind component? Write short note on basic runway length.

2. The total trips produced in and attracted to the three zones A, B and C of a survey area are
tabulated as:

Zone Trips Trips Zone Trips Trips

Produced Attracted Produced Attracted
A 2000 3000 C 4000 2000
B 3000 4000
Trips between two zones are having second power of travel time, which is uniformly 20minutes.
Calculate the trip interchange between zones (A and B); (A and C); (B and C).

3. What is wind coverage?

4. What is the difference between type I and Type II wind rose diagram?

5. The length of a runway under standard condition is 2100 m. The airport is to be provided at a
elevation of 230 m above the mean sea level. The data about the temperature is as follows.
Sum of mean daily temperature in the hottest month (May) = 15000C
Sum of maximum daily temperature during the above period = 12000C
The highest point on the runway has RL98.2 and lowest point on the runway has RL95.2.
Determine the corrected length of runway for the given conditions.
