 Abstract

The aim of this Research is to gather information about the Importance of Internet to

the Students of SDGS. The Researchers Conducted a Survey by providing Questionnaires to the

respondents. The results indicate that Studies and Communication are the Importance of Internet to

the SDGS Students. The report concludes that the result is true because of the influenced and current

status of the respondents. In our recommendation, St. Dominic de Guzman School must offer a Wifi

access to the students for their studies or Academic Purposes.

 1.0 INTRODUCTION

Today, the Internet is a public, cooperative and self-sustaining facility accessible to

hundreds of millions of people worldwide. Physically, the Internet uses a portion of the total

resources of the currently existing public telecommunication networks. Technically, what

distinguishes the Internet is its use of a set of protocols called TCP/IP (for Transmission Control

Protocol/Internet Protocol). Two recent adaptations of Internet technology, the intranet and

the extranet, also make use of the TCP/IP protocol. [TECH,2015]

The Internet, sometimes called simply "the Net," is a worldwide system of computer

networks a network of networks in which users at any one computer can, if they have

permission, get information from any other computer (and sometimes talk directly to users at

other computers). It was conceived by the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) of the

U.S. government in 1969 and was first known as the ARPANet. The original aim was to create a

network that would allow users of a research computer at one university to "talk to" research

computers at other universities. A side benefit of ARPANet's design was that, because messages

could be routed or rerouted in more than one direction, the network could continue to function

even if parts of it were destroyed in the event of a military attack or other disaster. [TECH,2015]

The most widely used part of the Internet is the World Wide Web (often abbreviated

"WWW" or called "the Web"). Its outstanding feature is hypertext, a method of instant cross-

referencing. In most Web sites, certain words or phrases appear in text of a different color than

There is a lot of wrong information on the internet. Anyone can post anything, and

much of it is garbage.

There are predators that hang out on the internet waiting to get unsuspecting people

in dangerous situations.

Some people are getting addicted to the internet and thus causing problems with their

interactions of friends and loved ones.

Pornography that can get in the hands of young children too easily.

Easy to waste a lot of time on the internet. You can start surfing, and then realize far

more time has passed than you realized. Internet and television together of added to

the more sedentary lifestyles of people which further exacerbates the obesity problem.

1.1 Background of Study

Internet in the Philippines first became available on March 29, 1994, with the Philippine

Network Foundation (PHNet) connecting the country and its people to Sprint in the United

States via a 64 kbit/s link. As of 2016, more than 44,000,000 people used the internet in the

country, accounting for 43.5% of the total population. [WIKI,2016]

A year after the connection, The Public Telecommunications Act of the Philippines was

made into law. Securing a franchise is now optional for value-added service providers. This law

enabled many other organizations to establish connections to the Internet, to create Web sites

and have their own Internet services or provide Internet service and access to others.

However the growth of the Internet in the Philippines was hindered by many Obstacles

including unequal distribution of Internet infrastructure throughout the country, its cost and

corruption in the government. But these obstacles did not altogether halt all the developments.

More connection types were made available to more Filipinos. Increasing bandwidth and a

growing number of Filipino Internet users were proof of the continuing development of the

Internet in the country. [WIKI,2016]

The Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012, codified as Republic Act No. 10175,

criminalized cybersquatting, cybersex, child pornography, identity theft, illegal access to data

and libel. The act has been criticized for its provision on criminalizing libel, which is perceived to

 be a curtailment in freedom of expression. After several petition submitted to the Supreme Court

of the Philippines questioned the constitutionality of the Act, the Supreme Court issued

a temporary restraining order on October 9, 2012 stopping implementation of the Act for 120

1.2 Historical Overview

History of St. Dominic de Guzman School (SDGS)

Strategically located along Barangay road of Caypombo, Sta. Maria, Bulacan is St.

Dominic de Guzman School (Formerly Santissimo Sacramento Catholic School) which was

founded by Rev. Quirico Cruz with the blessing of His Excellency Jose Francisco Oliveros, DD.

Bishop of Malolos.

The first batch composed of 25 Pre-elementary pupils which started the humble

beginning in the Parish Hall of Santissimo Sacramento Parish with Parish youth leaders as their

teachers.

November 2006, the school was registered to the Securities and Exchange Commission

as Santissimo Sacramento Catholic School, School Year 2007-2008 a one storey building with 4

classrooms was constructed. Grades 1 & 2, First and Second year high school were opened

Government Recognition was granted for the Pre-school and Elementary Course in August 12,

2008.

On April 2010. The school was turned over by the Diocese to the Dominican Sisters of

St. Joseph with Sr. Domiciana M. Tenorio, O.P. as the Directress and Mrs. Luz M. Marcos as the

Principal. Government Recognition for secondary course was granted in July, 2010. That was

the time when the name was changed to St. Dominic de Guzman School. Enrollment

continuously increased, thus, improvement and construction of facilities and building were

initiated to accommodate more students. Training and updating were initiated to the

administrators. Faculty and staff. More interactive for Pupils and Students in and outside the

diocese were done.

Current status of St. Dominic de Guzman School in Terms of Technology

According to the Researchers observation and Experiences throughout the year in

studying at SDGS the Status of technology here Doesnt Evolve that much Except for the Internet

providers that gives internet to the Computer lab of the School and Teachers office for Education

purposes. But this Evolution isnt enough to cope up with the fast emerging of technology and

internet Access globally.

Last December 2015 St. Dominic de Guzman School Sent a Participant in the 17th Intl.

Robotics Olympiad in Bucheon, South Korea and they got 1 Special award on their specific

robotic event as an Addition to the 62 medals and 3 of them are gold Got by the Philippine

Robotic Team. One of those Participants is The Researchers Former classmate Named Zillah

Germono that used to be their consistent 1st Honor and Graduated at SDGS as a Class

Valedictorian. [GIZM,2015]

1.3 Statement of the Problem

 St. Dominic de Guzman School in Bulacan that Offers Technology Studies but their

student is not enough to handle the Evolution of Technologies. Here are some of the Problems

they might experience today:

o Lack of Technology

If a student is required to do homework using the tablet, their parents may not

be able to help them with any questions they may have if they are not familiar with the software

or equipment.

Equipment is the First tool needed to Access the Internet but not all of the

students have their own Technology at home such as computer and laptop that they can use for

Academic Purposes.

o Lack of Critical Thinking among the Students

Quick access to information can lead to a lack of critical thinking about sources

and quality of information, as well as an inability to mine for data. Many students will likely

click one or two pages into a Web site, but no further. This means that in addition to creating

concentration problems, students who multitask too much develop a tendency toward skimming

rather than in-depth reading and analysis. This, more than anything, will hurt grades and the

development of the intellect. [WASH,2013]

 o Lack of Internet Access

In the Policy of St. Dominic de Guzman School (SDGS) Students are not allowed

to bring any of their Technology Devices inside the School Campus except for the Senior High

school Students of SDGS but this is not the only Problem the main problem here the students

Access to the Internet of the School. In SDGS students are not allowed to access in the Internet

spot in the school even when they need it on Academic Purposes such as researching or

Communicating outside for academic Purposes. Philippines being one of the Countries with

slowest speed of Internet Connection in the world so not surprisingly it is one of the Problem

when talking about Internet. The Internet being slow that makes Searching or browsing the

Internet Difficult than the Country.

o Causes Distraction among the students

Indeed, Internet is very helpful when it comes to study but Keeping the Internet

on during the class is not helpful because it leads students into a distraction. Like for Example.

You can have a brief conversation on Facebook during a math class and when you look up again

the blackboard is covered with symbols and numbers -- and you have no idea what's happened.

Part from switching the internet connection off, some students even went as far as saying that

computers in the classrooms should be banned. [SCIE,2014]

Accessing Internet is very complicated One can be Lost if you dont have enough

Knowledge about it, this is one of the most common problem in Using Internet the Lacking of

Knowledge about it Before using or Accessing it. In addition to this is the Wasting of time in

putting the routine of how to open the internet the Plugging and Unplugging of the Used Devices.

Internet being one of the Dangerous place to stay with has much danger than what you have

expected and here are some of the Dangers that might occur while accessing internet:

o Online Predators

Here's what Donna Rice Hughes has to say about this problem: "One of the

attractions of the Internet is the anonymity of the user, and this is why it can be so dangerous.

A child doesn't always know with whom he or she is interacting. Children may think they

know, but unless it's a school friend or a relative, they really can't be sure. Often we think of

pedophiles as having access to children on the playground and other [physical] places, but

because of the way the Internet works, children actually can be interacting on their home

computers with adults who pretend to be children. [EDUC,2011]

o Cyber Bullying

According to www.cyberbully.org, "Cyberbullying is sending or posting harmful or

cruel text or images using the Internet or other digital communication devices."

Cyberbully.org is devoted to mobilizing educators, parents, students, and others to combat

1.4 Objectives

This research want to know the Importance of Internet to the SDGS Students if it

is Helpful or a Distraction to their Studies. This study helps us and make us Tips or ideas on

what internet is, how to use it, and what is the importance of it especially to the students.

The Researchers will conduct a research on this Particular topic to understand the

Importance of the Internet to the SDGS students. And to have further knowledge about the

importance of it on different aspects such as communication and also for academic purposes.

After conducting a survey, the researcher must study the Importance of Internet

to the Students of St. Dominic de Guzman School (SDGS). On how the Students react to a

different various questions related to the importance of Internet to the Youth especially to SDGS

Students. And to encourage schools like SDGS to use Internet Services and give access for all

students and teachers to use for academic purposes. Context: Research has found that Internet

is very helpful to the students and teachers when used effectively, can significantly improve

teaching and learning. In this research were recommending to widens ones Perspective in terms

of the benefits that the Internet can offer not only to the students but also for future generation

on their studies and communication.

1.6 Scope and Limitations

Scope

The extent of the area or subject matter that something deals with or to which it

is relevant. [OXFO,20s]

The Researchers are working with this topic, the Importance of Internet to the

Students to determine how Internet showed its Importance to Students in Different aspects. St.

Dominic de Guzman School (SDGS) is the place where the study is conducted by the Researcher

where most of our respondents are present. The Researchers Limited their scope to gathered

the data from the Level 3 or High schools Students of SDGS Considering they are the main focus

on this study because Students are the one whos accessing and browsing different sites on the

internet for Entertainment and academic purposes on their Home.

The Researchers 30 Participants from different Grades and Section of SDGS High

Schools from the department of Junior High school in Grade 10-Grade 7 and to the Senior High

school Grade 12 Grade 11 during the school year 2017-2018 are Selected to be the Participants

in this study.This number of Participants are selected based on their knowledge and capability

to give an opinion that makes the generalization of this topic Significant.

Limitation

The act of allowing only a specific quantity of something. [BUSI,20s]

One of the Weaknesses of the study is being Inaccurate. The Inaccuracy of the

Perceptions of the participants is beyond the control of the Researchers. For Instance, the

 Question all of the information in the internet are reliable maybe their answered is Yes in 17

participants, No in 5 Participants, and maybe by 8 remaining participants, with these ratings,

not all of them could be correct in their assessment, Some could have inaccurate if not entirely

misunderstood the question or Wrong Perception. Also the Effectiveness of the study is difficult

to ensure although the Researchers have gave an Information came from the observation,

Surveys, and internet based information still the effectiveness is not sure.

For the Students Since the internet is very in demand especially in todays Generation

the Researchers Studied about the importance of the Internet to the students of SDGS for us to collect

reliable Data or Information about that Particular topic for future use or study.

and Internet usage through giving information about the Importance of Internet to the students of

Useful to the Community of SDGS especially to their Future Students. Considering the Problems of

the school is present in this study, they must focus on that problem and create Necessary actions

technology and Internet Access on their School.

Although students are the main Participants in this Research study they are not the only

beneficiary of the information that we got, but also the Teachers in SDGS because these information

1.8 Methodology

Data collection will consist of surveys and observations with the St. Dominic de

Guzman Schools Student.

Initially, a survey instrument to measure Students knowledge about the importance

of internet to the Students of SDGS is a Questionnaires and Observations that give us Reliable

and Trusted information, data and opinion about the importance of Internet to the student of

SDGS. To get some reliable and based on experienced information we conduct a Qualitative

research by gathering data or information from the Questionnaire that we made and distributed

among the Level 3 High schools of Students of St. Dominic de Guzman School.

In our Process of Data collection the Instrument that weve used is the following:

a. Questionnaire

Is an instrument that is comprised of a set of questions to be asked to the participants

of the Survey. Sir Francis Galton, an English polymath, introduced the use of the questionnaire

in surveys. Questionnaires usually ask questions that elicit ideas and behaviors, preferences,

b. Survey Form

Is a data gathering method that is utilized to collect, analyze and interpret the views

of a group of people from a target population. Surveys have been used in various fields of

The Reason why the Researchers need the literature is because literature review

covers all the scientific literature in a field. It also describes, summarise, evaluate, and clarify

the Literature.

The aim of a literature review is to show your reader (your tutor) that you have

read, and have a good grasp of, the main published work concerning a particular topic or

question in your field. This work may be in any format, including online sources. It may be a

separate assignment, or one of the introductory sections of a report, dissertation or thesis. In

the latter cases in particular, the review will be guided by your research objective or by the issue

Everyday. Internet includes a variety of current issues and developments about the world. One

of the benefits is internet gives lots of information to us. Students could even use the internet

as a replacement of textbooks and reference books as it contains an endless source of

knowledge. Students can also check the latest scientific knowledge and research. Scientist

nowadays have been experimenting and discovering a lot of intriguing and new things. This type

of stream is very suitable for students who are interested to further their studies in science

stream [TRIP,2011]

Which for the Researchers is correct that Internet replaces everything that contains

information such as textbooks, Manuals, and even reference books because it contains and

endless sources of information or knowledge that might be useful to the studies of students.

Teachers can make use of the Internet by giving students extra resources and material

from the Internet, such as interactive lessons and educational games. Many college courses use

variety of sources allows students to pursue subjects in much greater detail rather than being

Communication

It used to be that students that forgot work, missed a lecture or couldn't remember an

assignment were out of luck until talking face to face with a teacher or a classmate. However,

the Internet allows instantaneous connection to your classmates and teachers. Improving

communication between students and teachers allows teachers to assist students without having

to stay after class. It also allows for students to have greater efficiency when working on projects

with their peers when everyone cannot attend or asking for clarification when something is

unclear. [ITST,2012]

Accessibility

A number of universities, such as Harvard, Yale and Stanford, have opened up free

courses on a variety of subjects that are accessible to anyone for free. These typically come in

Throughout the Study Internet seems well-likely known by the Students of

SDGS as 100% of the samples answered yes for the questions related to popularity of

the Internet. However, only 77% of that 100% are proven using the Internet. After

receiving these Data the Researchers Found that on those people whose using internet

which is 77% there are 67% who can live without Internet therefore the people will see

the Relationship between this three results That Most of us know what internet is but not

all of us are using Internet. And as a result Internet Influence students to use Internet

every time to the point that they cant live without it.

 The Statistical data that the Researchers examined earlier is just a minor detail

that the researchers have found throughout their research. But the main objective in this

research is to Seek Information about the Importance of internet to the Students of SDGS.

And now the Researchers have tabulated the result and Found out that 63%

among the Samples said that Internet plays an important role in their studies especially

for seeking Information as 73% of the Students who said that internet plays an important

role in their studies said that they much preferred using internet than academic Textbooks

as it offers faster Sources of information.

Aside from studies one of the factors that the students of SDGS considered as

one of the Importance of Internet to them is the communication as 97% of the population

of 30 Agreed that Internet is influential in terms of communication as it makes the

communication faster with the use the Internet.

After a series of Interview, in depth surveys, Data Gathering, and Analysis the

researchers have the final result as for Studies and Communication being the Importance

of Internet to the students of SDGS.

5.0 CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Conclusion

The Data suggest that Studies is the Importance of Internet to the SDGS students.

Without a doubt this result is likely the perfect answer to the Research topic it is because our

respondents are students and it is noticeable that studies will be the feedback of the selected

respondents therefore I conclude that the result being the studies the importance of Internet in

the SDGS students is because of the respondents which is the Students. If the researchers

gathered different respondents such as Parents, teachers, or even the Students in the Lower

grade the Answer might be for entertainment, news, and communication.

Recommendation

As a result of SDGS does not offer a WiFI Access to Their students, SDGS must

Conduct a survey regarding to offering a WiFi access to the High schools students to use for

Academic Purposes with a consequences if caught used in different purposes, similarly with the

issue of Having an Internet in School. The researchers suggested that after conducting a

research SDGS must inform the High school Students about the Availability of the Internet in

the school and for being costless of using it just for Academic Purposes.
