Attention-getting procedures: Record different means of getting the entire
classs attention when they are engaged in an activity. (This may be different
for different subject areas.)
Verbal prompts:
o May I have everyones attention?
o Please put down what you are doing and look up.
o Give me 5
Repeat after me prompts: If you can hear me, clap once, if you can hear me, clap
twice, if you can hear me clap three times OR other clapping patterns (class class,
yes yes)
Question-answering procedures: What expectations will you have when
students are asking or answering questions? (Remember that a question
should get everyone thinking about an answer and thinking that they may be
expected to provide an answer.)
Use popsicle sticks with student names on them for random selection
Allow students to think about their answer in their head before prompting anybody.
I will choose somebody that is sitting quietly and being a good listener
Some questions may be answered exclusively by the special helper of the day
Transition Procedures: What routines will you establish around the

Set tone for the day
Write class agenda on whiteboard and verbally go through it all together what will
this class look like? What are the expectations? What will happen at the end?
Ask question/start discussion in desks or on carpet
Start of day:
Welcome students at the door
Get out Agendas
Attendance activity on white board
Reading at desk
Morning Message/Calendar led by student of the day
End of class:
Tidy area
Show they are ready to hear what will happen next
End of day:
Play clean up song and have students clean while it plays
Students put away blue bins before claiming an additional job (sweeper, dustpan,
stacking chairs, cleaning tables, handing out agendas)
When the song is finished, students finish their jobs and meet at the carpet for a
story.
Change of activities:
Explain activity changes at beginning of class, and signal transition with by getting
students attention to explain next transition steps.
Give time warnings prior to transitioning activities.
Change of subjects:
Put away current subject materials and get out new materials.
Line up at the door for gym or music, stay seated during all other classes
Distribution of materials:
Have a helper pass things out
Hand out things myself
Use number placemats and have students distribute materials based on number (i.e.
students assigned number 1 grab handouts for their row/partner/group, etc.)
Accessing of equipment:
Have equipment/tools that students may regularly need in an easily accessible and
neat place that they may grab themselves if necessary
Bring out equipment students may need in advance
Classroom clean up:
Put a song on, when song is done everything needs to be cleaned up
Nobody leaves until everything is clean, so students must help their neighbors when
they are done their own cleaning
Daily and Safety Procedures: What will you expect of your students and
yourself with regard to:
Late arrivals:
Talk to parents about importance of punctuality
Absences:
Note in attendance
Having absent folders where students can gather missed handouts upon their return
Discuss with parents if absences become an issue
Use of cell phones and other communications technology:
No cell phones in the classroom
Bathroom breaks:
Award as needed only 1 student gone at a time
If students begin taking an unnecessary amount of breaks, instate a bathroom pass
system to monitor proper use
Pencil sharpening:
Students may put their dull pencils in a designated bin for teachers to sharpen, and
grab a sharp one from a separate container designated for sharpened pencils
Student telephone calls to home:
Not encouraged
Students may only call home when they are not feeling well or in case of emergency.
Individual seatwork:
Not to be discussed with neighbors (unless a peer can answer their question)
Raise hand if they have any questions
Playground and free time rules:
Respectful of others
No rough-housing
Distinguish Big Issues and Little Issues and how big issues require telling a
teacher and little issues do not (discourage tattling)
Must share; if students cannot come to an agreement, item will be on a time out
Late homework or assignments:
Students that have not completed assignments will finish while other students meet
at the carpet or do an activity, and may join upon completion
Missing homework or assignments:
Have students complete missing homework or assignments instead of having free
time
Discuss agreement with student about when it can be completed and why it is
important to complete
Homework reminders:
Agenda
Student illness or injury:
The teacher will treat injury as best as they can. If injury is small, a note will go
home in the students agenda. Parents will be called for larger injuries or illnesses.
Fire drills:
Students will remain calm and line up at the door quietly as instructed, leaving all
belongings in their chairs. Students will quietly follow their teacher in line to the
muster point, where they will then be counted/accounted for and wait for
permission to re-enter the school.
Lockdowns:
Students will remain calm and follow school lockdown procedure. We will remain in
a room with closed and locked doors, sitting up against a wall not visible through
windows. The door will remain closed until an RCMP slides a card under the door to
signify the lockdown is over.
