Human Resources Internship Program

The Methodist Hospital

The Methodist Hospital’s 2004 Human Resource (HR) Internship Program offers one to
three intern(s) the opportunity to experience a facet of the complex HR functions in a
multi-hospital organization for approximately 10-12 weeks in the summer, fall or spring

Program Structure
Methodist HR will sponsor one to three graduate student(s) for an internship lasting
approximately ten to twelve weeks during the summer, fall or spring. The intern(s) will
complete a value-added project that they will formally present to key stakeholders near
completion of the internship. In addition, the intern(s) will gain an overview of the HR
functions in a multi-hospital organization through exposure to all HR departments at
each hospital. The intern(s) will meet with the program’s preceptors on a regular basis
to discuss the internship experience.

Eligibility
Applicant(s) must be currently enrolled in graduate disciplines such as, but not limited to,
Human Resources, Business Administration or Health Care Administration. Applicant(s)
must have completed, at the minimum, either 2 semesters or 3 quarters of graduate
work in their discipline.

Application Requirements
Students interested in participating in the internship program should submit the following:

o a one-page statement discussing why you are interested in an internship in HR;


what you can contribute to HR; and what you hope to gain from the experience
as an intern in HR;
o two letters of professional recommendation (i.e., one academic and one job
related);
o a current resume; and
o an official transcript of all graduate work

Completed applications for the summer, 2004 Internship must be received by


March 10. Interviews will be conducted between March 24 and April 21. Selection of an
intern will be announced by May 7.
Selection Process
Selected applicants will be invited for an onsite interview with various key members of
the Methodist HR organization.

Job Placement
HR does not guarantee job placement at Methodist for students completing the
internship program.

About the Preceptors


Both Toni Kesler and Harold Griffin serve as preceptors for the HR internship program.

Toni Kesler, Project Manager, supports members of senior management through the
planning, organizing, directing, controlling, and coordination of resources to achieve
projects of varying degrees of complexity. Toni’s area of technical expertise lies in the
field of human resources management, where her career spans more than 15 years
serving the needs and demands of academic healthcare.

Harold Griffin, Director of Human Resources, provides analytical and specialized support
to entities throughout The Methodist Hospital in matters involving human resources
management, with special emphasis on employee relations (ER) related topics. Harold’s
career in healthcare spans more than 17 years, with 7 of those years in human
resources management. He is an accomplished author in the disciplines of healthcare
human resources management and labor-management relations, and holds faculty
appointments at two prestigious universities.
