Abrasion of Upper Ball Bearing Space of Marine Fuel Oil (C-Oil) Purifier Vertical Shaft

The vertical shaft of a marine fuel oil purifier was pulled out for inspection after vibration occurred during operation. It was found that the upper ball bearing space of the vertical shaft was abraded. The cause was determined to be insufficient tightening of the upper bearing nut, which allowed the inner race to rotate and cause abrasion. To repair it, a 10/100mm liner was inserted into the abraded part of the shaft. After reassembly, good results were obtained and it was decided the shaft could be used as a spare part.

Purifier Vertical Shaft
Technical committee

1. Outline

On July 21, 1988, the vertical shaft was pulled out and the ball bearing was replaced.
On October 4, 1988, the bowl was overhauled and cleaned, and the O-ring was replaced.
On February 10, 1989, the No.2 Marine Fuel Oil (C-oil) purifier malfunctioned and a switch over to
the No.1 C-oil purifier was conducted. However, since heavy vibration occurred, operation was
stopped immediately. The gear case was overhauled, the horizontal and vertical shafts were pulled out,
and inspection was performed. As a result, abrasion to the upper ball bearing space of the vertical
shaft was found.

2. Cause

Due to insufficient tightening of the upper bearing nut, the inner lace rotated concurrently and abrasion
occurred.

3. Repair

A liner of 10/100mm was inserted to the abraded part of the shaft. After assembly, good results were
obtained and it was decided to be used as a spare.
