INTRODUCTION:
University of Modern Sciences provides opportunities and resources for
career development, internship of its students. The University has systems in
guiding the students to choose and pursue a right career path, advising in the
process of acquiring an internship opportunity with an organization and gaining
part time, full time and summer jobs for the students. This manual is exclusively
prepared to assist the students pursuing internship, which is one of the required
courses in their program of study.
INTERNSHIP:
The internship program of University of Modern Sciences assists students
to work and learn in a professional environment. Students are able to apply the
knowledge gained in the classrooms in a work setting, thus enriching their learning
experience that helps students transition into the work world. It helps students
develop a better understanding of a particular industry. Since students work to
gain experience, it is important that they be placed in an environment that is
conducive to learning.
A clear job description is sought for the interns before work starts to ensure
the experience will be substantial and valuable. It is important to mention that
internship is a learning experience in the real life situations. An internship is an
opportunity for our students, who have already earned 70 credits in the program
of study, to apply and practice the theoretical knowledge gained in classrooms
into real life situations. It is a three credit hours course requirement of the
program.
The internship program requires at least a total of 288 hours to be spent in
the workplace by learning the hands-on experience. The whole internship program
may have a period of 8-12 weeks at the concluding stages of the degree program.
The students may be required to work between 4 to 6 hours in a day during the
internship period, depending on his/her academic load.
In case, a student is currently working or employed in a family owned
business he/she may use the opportunity to get their work evaluated in the
appropriate mode of assessment set by the University and be able to fulfill the
requirements of the course. Upon meeting the course requirements, the student
will be awarded a grade for the course based on the results of the assessments.

GENERIC OBJECTIVES OF INTERNSHIP:
Students are expected to benefit in the areas such as critical thinking, effective
communication, problem solving, resource management, punctuality, personal
values- responsibilities, morality and integrity, interpersonal skills- attitude,
dependability, maturity and poise etc. the following are the generic objectives of
internship program:
To provide the students with understanding of the professional
experience in their chosen field of study.
To enable students to apply concepts and theories learned in the
classroom to actual practice in the workplace.
To develop the students skills, and to gain experience and knowledge for
future employment.
To provide the student with hands-on experience with routine practical
equipment and research and to develop their ability to present, interpret
and discuss research results.
EXPECTED OUTCOMES OF INTERNSHIP:
The learning experiences and the learning outcomes may vary depending on
his/her area of interest. The learning experience may broadly be stated as follows:
BUSINESS ADMINISRATION:
Students of Business Administration may undertake internship in areas like
banking and finance, business consulting, trading between countries, import and
export, marketing, Human Resource, manufacturing, and other economic
activities related areas such as the booming real estate sector.
The skills they may acquire in the process could be as follows:
General knowledge of specific industry, teamwork, how to make a positive
impact on the recognition and sales of a product, marketing process.
Interacting with clients, skills in selling goods and services.
Promotion skills, communication and interpersonal skills, research and
administrative skills, and managerial skills.
Skills in distribution channel management, knowledge of marketing within a
global company, sales planning and sales management.
Technical undertaking, software knowledge, customer service support skills.
Research skills, social business skills, and marketing skills.
Hands on experience on global marketing, e-business marketing, direct
channels marketing and customer service.
Knowledge of project management, Quality management, Strategic
Management and Inventory Management.

CRITERIA FOR SELECTING INTERNSHIP ORGANIZATION: The following
criteria are used in order to select the right type of organization for student
internships:
a. The company profile
b. The professional growth of the company
c. The companies national and international operations
d. The stability of the company
e. The size and operation of the company
Once finalized, University of Modern Sciences and the respective internship
organization sign an internship agreement.

PROCEDURES TO APPLY FOR INTERNSHIP:
Students are required to register online and indicate their interest and area of
work for the purpose of internship. Once the students preferences are known, a
meeting of the student, his/her academic advisor and internship coordinators is
held to finalize the internship organization for the student. A faculty coordinator is
appointed from University of Modern Sciences who would monitor the process,
appraise and evaluate the intern throughout the internship. The coordinator would
be a full time faculty of University of Modern Sciences. The internship organization
needs to appoint a training supervisor who would supervise and evaluate the
intern throughout the internship.
Students are encouraged to arrange Internships on their own. The process of
search & selection of a company for Internship provides the student valuable
experience towards finding suitable placement after graduating.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF STUDENT AFFAIRS DEPARTMENT (SAD):
Prior to registration
Prior to the students enrollment in the internship, the SAD gives the
presentation to students and discusses the duties and responsibilities required
for the internship, as well as the students time commitment (number of hours
required for the internship).
The SAD will initiate contact with the supervisor to define the students duties
and responsibilities and to discuss expectations of performance during the
internship. SAD will also send evaluation forms to the training supervisor.

Each Internship will be approved by the Dean. Academic advisor and SAD will
be responsible for the academic supervision of individual internships and the
integration of the practical and theoretical work.
Ongoing meetings will be schedule with the student to discuss the internship
experience. The SAD will schedule a minimum of three meetings during the
semester. Meetings should occur two weeks after the internship begins, at the
midterm of the internship period, and at the end of the semester. In cases
where meetings are not possible, regular contact by other means must be
maintained.
The SAD will maintain contact with the training supervisor; periodic contacts
should be made at the beginning, midpoint, and end of the semester. Site
visitations will be arranged at the discretion of the SAD. An evaluation of the
student intern should be obtained from the training supervisor at the beginning
of the semester and at the end, before the conclusion of the internship period.
TRAINING SUPERVISORS RESPONSIBILITIES:
The employer where the intern registers for the internship need to follow certain
guidelines listed below:
Develop a detailed job description for the student intern; discuss requirements
with the student intern.
Inform managers/supervisors/employees of the company of the internship
program.
Provide an orientation for the student. Introduce the student to the organization,
the employee and the physical layout.
Give the intern the opportunities to apply education and skills. Assign duties
(jobs) that include elements of planning, designing, evaluating and reasoning.
Note: Not more than 20% of the interns duties should consist of clerical work
such as typing, filling, etc.
Provide opportunities for the intern to ask questions and discuss progress.
Allow a site visit and provide contact to the students monitor.
Provide an evaluation of the students performance.
Note: Evaluation forms will be provided.
ASSESSMENT OF STUDENT INTERNSHIP:
A midterm and final evaluation form Annexure B & C, designed for the evaluation
of student interns, are sent in to the internship organization to be filled in by the
training supervisor. Records of the same are maintained if the internship
organization agrees to provide the feedback.

The training supervisors comments are shared with faculty to bring in
improvement in the program.
An internship report is submitted by each intern. Grades are awarded by the
monitor on the basis of the students report & presentation and the evaluation
sheets from the training supervisor.
