MANAGEMENT

PLAN
TAY L O R H O E Y
EDU 402
INTRODUCTORY LETTER TO
PARENTS
Hello Parents!
My name is Taylor Hoey and I am so excited to have your child, and eighteen others, in our second
grade class! I have been preparing to welcome your child into my classroom for a few months now,
and I am looking forward to this year!
I am attaching a survey about your child that includes allergies, anything you might want me to know
about your child, and any concerns you might have. Please send this back with your child, and if you
wish to contact me, I am available through email or telephone.
I hope to see you at the Open House that is coming up soon, as I will go more in-depth about what
your child will be learning this year, classroom rules, and how to get a hold of me.
Heres to a fantastic year!

Sincerely,
Ms. Hoey
ENTRY/MORNING ROUTINES

I will greet students at the door in the morning. They must enter by giving me a high five,
handshake, or hug
There will be music playing from a school appropriate Pandora station
When they enter the room this is the time for:
Students to unpack book-bags and hang them and their coats in their cubbies
Put homework in homework basket
They may talk with classmates and move about room
There will be a writing check-in on the board, they must write their check-in in their journals. The
topics will be broad and random (or possibly goes along with what were learning, or seasonal). The
students can write whatever they want on the topic.
I will have a five-minute warning for when I will shut off the music. When the music turns off, they
should have completed their check-in and turned in their homework.
MANAGING MATERIALS

In my classroom, there is a place for all materials, such as glue, scissors, and paper.
These places are accessible to students in various cupboards, on bookshelves, etc. around the
room.
Students will be taught from day one that materials should not be left strewn about the floor
or on desks, but should be put back in their place after using them.
Students will also be taught to keep their floor space neat, as well as inside their desks.
An incentive for this is the Desk Fairy. On Fridays, the Desk Fairy gives students a piece of candy to
students who have kept their space and desk tidy all week
By teaching students that everything has a place and that they must keep their areas clean,
teaches them responsibility for their space as well as my property. Keeping an organized
classroom, as Biffle wrote, is key to keeping students on track and an mischief at bay.
TURNING IN
HOMEWORK/CLASSWORK
There will be two baskets near my desk, one is for homework and the other is for classwork
Students are taught to turn in their homework when they come in at the beginning of the day,
anytime after that will be considered late.
For classwork, students must quietly turn in their completed classwork in the Classwork Basket
right after finishing it.
All homework and classwork must have the students name
I will implement this because it establishes a routine for the students an holds them
accountable for turning in their homework
CLASSROOM JOBS
I will have six classroom jobs that I will pick students for, the jobs will rotate weekly
If a student wants a specific job, that student can request it by submitting a paragraph why he/she
would like the job and he/she should have it
Line leader: This student will always be line leader
Caboose: This student will always be the caboose of the line, and also has the responsibility to turn
off the lights and shut the door
Equipment Manager: This could possibly be a job for two students. They will be in charge of
carrying recess toys to recess
Computer Technician: This student will be responsible for turning on and off the computers at the
beginning and end of the day
Messenger: The Messenger is in charge of taking notes to the office or other teachers
Teachers Assistant: The Teachers Assistant will help the teacher pass out/collect papers, as well as
collects all worksheets or papers for absent students and puts them in a designated folder
GETTING ATTENTION

I will teach and implement the Class-Yes technique from Biffle

A variety of strategies for getting attention is important to keep the students on their toes and
so they wont get bored
I can also implement Times Up, Signs Up. This is a saying that I will say when I need
attention, and I will put a finger over my mouth and raise my other finger in the air. When
students hear or see me, they must stop what they are doing and mimic my sign
CLEANING UP AFTER LESSONS
When it is time to clean up after a lesson or activity, I will play the song Iko Iko
When students hear this song start, they must immediately:
Start cleaning up all materials
Put materials in respective places
Throw away trash if needed
Put finished work in Classwork Basket
Make their way back to their seats
DONE EARLY WITH WORK
If a student is done early with their work they have two options:
they can Ketchup and Pickle
They can ketchup on any work they havent finished
Or they can pickle from a variety of given activities
Go to the Library
Read a library book silently at their desks
Work on a current assignment (such as a writing assignment)
LINING UP
At the door, I will put a long piece of tape on the floor to mark a line on the ground
I will call groups one at a time to stand in line, the students must stand on the tape
The designated Line Leader and Caboose will take their position in line.
Once in line, students are expected to be quiet and keep their hands to themselves.
The line does not move until everyone is silent and ready to go
BIRTHDAYS
I will have a chart on the wall that says everyones birthday, including mine
We will celebrate everyones birthday, or half-birthday if their actual birthday falls during
summer break
Those that have a birthday on a weekend or during a holiday break can choose either to
celebrate the Friday before or the Monday after
We will celebrate at the end of the day. The birthday person can choose to bring in treats, or if
they dont I will bring in something (all treats must not contain any allergens that classmates
might have)
I will provide a Birthday Hat for the birthday person to wear, well play fun music, and pictures
will be taken
END OF DAY/DISMISSAL ROUTINES
At the end of the day, I will end classroom activities about twenty minutes before students are
supposed to leave
Students will collect their book bags and coats from their cubbies and bring them back to their
seat
All students will be packed and ready to go
During the time we are waiting for students to be dismissed to the bus platform, I will read a
book aloud to the class while students remain at their desk
These books will be novels that we can read over the course of several days or weeks, such as
Bridge to Terabithia or Bud, Not Buddy (or anything else age appropriate)
This will save the class from breaking out into chaos as well as have a calming way to end the
day by reading a book just for pleasure.
BRAIN BREAKS
I am a strong believer that students need mental and physical breaks throughout the day after
being expected to sit quietly in their seats
In-between certain lessons, after lunch and recess, or whenever I see them start to get antsy, I
will play a GoNoodle video
The video I pick may depend on what kind of mood I need in the classroom, such as a video to
calm them down or to liven them up
Some videos will be picked just so they can move around, dance, and get some energy
released.
