Prior Learning
Students will not have any previous learning for this activity since it will be a new
lesson and area of study.
Unit of Study
The unit of study is the American Flag.
Academic Learning Outcomes
   1. The students will be able to explain what the stars and the stripes stand for on the
American flag and will be able to color an American flag with the appropriate
      colors in the appropriate places.
Implementation
   1. Introduction to the Lesson
      - Gather students: *Direct students attention to American flag on white board*
Can anyone tell me what this is and where they have seen this before? Today
we are going to learn about the American flag and what the different parts of
the flag mean. I will first read a book and then you will be able to color in an
American flag with the correct colors.
   2. Sequence of Activities
      - TTW read F is for Flag by Wendy Lewiston,
      - TTW lead a discussion of what the students learned in the book. (What places
did it say the flag was located? What did they learn about the history of the
         flag?)
      - TTW introduce the activity and tell the students that we will be looking at the
different parts of the flag and what they mean
      - TTW record students analysis, on the whiteboard by drawing arrows and
writing numbers, of what parts of the flag they see (stripes, stars, etc.)
      - TTW guide students in counting the stripes and stars
       - TTW ask how many states are there today and remind them that it is the
number of stars on the new flag as it mentioned in the book
      - TTW explain what the activity is (Coloring the flag) and pass out the papers
and markers. Remind the students that we do not have white colors and so you
will have to be careful and remember to not color in the places that are
         supposed to be white.
   3. Assessment
      - I will know that students have understood the lesson if they are able to color
the American flag template correctly and tell me what the stars and stripes
         represent.
   4. Closure
      - Today we learned about the American flag and what the different parts of
it mean. Can anyone tell me what how many stars are on the flag and what
         they represent?
