Social and Political Stratification: A Reflection
In our current society, there are many many classifications that
describe us. One of them is according to wealth. Mayaman, medyo
mayaman, sakto lang, and mahirap; these are some that describe some
Filipinos. These classifications in the society will cause inequality, whether it
is due to wealth, power, or prestige.
In the Hindu society, they classify themselves according to their
responsibilities. The priest, being close to their gods, are the elites of them
all. Next, the warriors and the king, and the merchants, who are below them.
Lastly, the peasants, commoners, and servants; they are considered below
because they serve those who are above them. Stratification is the division
or classification of societys members into different strata, promoting a
hierarchy among social groups.
There may be classifications but along with it, inequalities. It is one of
the disadvantage with the stratification of societys members. For example,
if we divide the whites from the blacks, wont that cause a commotion? In
America, there is a running joke that if you don't want to be shot by the police,
be white. In terms of wealth, many elites may take advantage of their mone
to exploit the little people into doing their dirty works. Stratification may
solve the division of the society into groups but theres gaps that need to be
closed if we need the groups to accept, if not socialize, each other.
In the 21st century, acceptance is a must. Gone are the days in which
call the natives indio but now, friend. If ever, everyone must practice
sensitivity to everyone. For us Filipinos, we may be divided according to
our wealth or power but we must work together if we want our country to
shine brighter in the Orient.
