Winter is the coldest time of the year. It is one of the four seasons. It comes after autumn.

Winter begins on the winter solstice. In the Northern Hemisphere the winter solstice is usually December 21
or December 22. In the Southern Hemisphere the winter solstice is usually June 21 or June 22. The days
become shorter and the nights become longer.

The winter solstice is the time when the sun has the biggest distance to the equator. The word solstice
comes from Latin Sol (sun) and sistere (to not move), winter solstice meaning Sun standstill in winter. The
winter solstice is celebrated around December 21 since 1582, when Pope Gregory XIII introduced the
Gregorian calendar.

A winter landscape

Meteorological winter is the season having the shortest days and the lowest average temperatures, which
have the coldest weather. This corresponds to the months of December, January and February in the
Northern Hemisphere, and June, July and August in the Southern Hemisphere.

Some animals hibernate during this season. Others migrate to warmer places.

In temperate climates there are no leaves on deciduous trees in winter.
