When the mind is absolutely still.when it is no longer engaged in what we call worship.which means
every worship has a worshipper and the thing worshipped, or the thinker and the thing thought
about.when the observer and the thing being observed cease as a dual fact.when it is only
one.which is just observance.then takes place what is known as the discovery of the Self.
Serving the Guru
The best service one can give the guru is to realize God - have the vision of the Ishta or
attain brahmajnana, knowedge of Brahman. The second best service would be to try to achieve
that realization by following the Gurus instructions. Another would be to convey Sri
Ramakrishnas message to others. Once, Swami Yatiswarananda, later a Vice-President of
Ramakrishna Order, wanted to perform sadhana, spiritual disciplines, in solitude. Swami
Brahmananda, his guru, asked: How much capacity do you have to do this? We have already
done this for you. Go and preach the message of Vivekananda door to door. To lessen the ego,
dont think you are preaching, but rather that you are merely conveying the teachings. If you are
asked, Have you realized God? say, I believe in God and I have some conviction that God is
there, but I have not yet realized Him. We practice humility by not thinking we are either the guru
or the teacher.
In the Ramakrishna Order the guru tells the disciple, I am not the guru. The guru is God. Swami
Shivananda and other direct disciples of Ramakrishna all verified, I am not the guru, meaning,
according to the guru lineage, the supreme Guru was Sri Ramakrishna.
Sri Ramakrishna was asked, Is a guru necessary? Who is the guru? He explained, God
Satchidanandais the guru. Human gurus are the conduits of this supreme Source. Swami
Satprakashananda, former head of the St. Louis Vedanta center, had a conflict from whom he
should take initiationSwami Brahmananda or Holy Mother, Sri Sarada Devi. Each one told him
to go to the other. Finally he went to Swami Shivananda who said, It is the same water (meaning
the power conveyed from the supreme Guru). Rainwater has fallen from the roof. It is coming out
through the mouth of the tiger and the mouth of the lion. There is no distinction between the two.
We are only the conduits, the channel through which the guru power flows. If ones guru is
evolved, the result will be better. The power of the mantra will be more. Your faith will be more.
Your power, mantra power, and the guru power all combined give the results. Mantra power is
increased if you have faith, and it increases even more if the teacher has faith.
Practice meditation regularly. Both in the morning & evening, so that the mind is calm & one is
able to maintain equanimity. With constant practice, great changes happen in ones being. One
should constantly observe themselves to realize what needs to change, and what needs to be
ejected in order to purify & still the mind. There is great wisdom in turning our mind inward. - Sri
M
Signs of progress on the Spiritual Path: 1. Control over ones senses not ensnared by desire,
no pride, anger, hatred or jealousy 2. Equanimity - tranquil in all circumstances, both positive &
challenging & 3. Having the welfare of every being in ones heart. No arrogance, no
possessiveness. It develops through persistent spiritual practice. Slowly the my-ness goes
away, the I-ness, the Ahamkaara disappears. Then, one is ever content, ever alive to happiness
& misery, alike. The more these characteristics come, the more one is walking on the spiritual
path according to Sri Krishna. Sri M.
Concentration & Raja Yoga:
We have but one method of acquiring knowledge. From the lowest man to the highest Yogi, all
have to use the same method; and that method is what is called concentration. This, the power
of concentration, is the only key to the treasure-house of knowledge.
The system of Raja-Yoga deals almost exclusively with this. In the present state of our body we
are so much distracted, and the mind is frittering away its energies upon a hundred sorts of
things. As soon as I try to calm my thoughts and concentrate my mind upon any one object of
knowledge, thousands of undesired impulses rush into the brain; thousands of thoughts rush into
the mind and disturb it. How to check it and bring the mind under control is the whole subject of
study in Raja-Yoga. Swami Vivekananda.
A seeker after Truth is a different being different from an ordinary mortal. An ordinary
mortal runs after sense pleasures. He craves so much for external things: for money, for
name and fame, for objects of ambition. But a student after Truth does not care for all these
things. His mind is far above these material pursuits. He is ready to understand the higher
truth the truth of immortal life.

The Approach to Truth in Vedanta - Being and Becoming:
Vedanta says that in the inner world, all knowing tends to being; when you try to know your own
true nature, you realise that you are That - a spark of the Divine. In the external world, it is
never so. If I study a star, I do not become a star; if I study a table, I do not become a table. But
when you study your own self in depth, you are That and you become That. You are rising, you
are growing, you are developing into That being. A Siddhartha becoming a Buddha, attaining
enlightenment. A new man comes upon the scene, full of love & compassion.
What a wonderful change comes into the human being!

All works are covered by some evil always like fire & smoke. We should therefore perform
actions with the largest measure of good & least of evil. Arjuna had to kill the noble Bhishma,
Drona & Karna in the battlefield. If he had not done so, the country would have been usurped by
tyrants & unrighteous kings to the inconceivable misfortune of mankind. Hence, those who do not
work for any personal interest, are not affected by any evil, for they work for the larger good of
the world Swami Vivekananda.
(Bhagavad Gita: Moksha-Sanyasa Yoga CH18/V48)
Eight Limbs of Yoga
First: Yama - This is the most important & has to govern the whole life.
Stick to it as best as you can. It keeps getting better with practice.
Its divisions are:
(1) Non-injuring any being by thought, word, or deed
(2) Non-covetousness (3) Chastity (4) Truthfulness
Second: Niyama The bodily care & cleanliness, moderation in
all activities, systematic diet, discipline etc.
Third: Asana (Posture) Hips, shoulders & head must be held straight,
leaving the spine free. All the nerve currents which are working pass
along the spine. The posture should be such that one may be able to
sit comfortably for a long time.
Fourth: Pranayama Restraining and release of breath, in order to get
control of the Prana or vital force (life energies) & channelize
it to higher planes of consciousness.
Fifth: Pratyahara - Turning the mind inward & restraining it from going
outward, revolving the matter in the mind to understand it.
Sixth: Dharana Focusing and concentration on ONE subject.
Seventh: Dhyana Meditation. When the mind has been trained
to remain fixed on the ONE subject, there comes to it the
power of flowing in an unbroken current, as it were, towards
that point. This state is called Dhyana.
Eight: Samadhi Illumination, the aim and goal of all our efforts
in the previous steps.

Greed transfers itself even into the so-called spiritual system. I call this spiritual
materialism. Realized teachers are not for sale. You can give them millions of dollars but
they would not teach someone, whom they think cannot be prepared for such heights of
spiritual progress. - Sri M.
