Doubling Farmers income through entrepreneurial initiative
Past strategy for development of the agriculture sector in India has focused primarily on raising
agricultural output and improving food security. The net result has been a 45 per cent increase in
per person food production, which has made India not only food self-sufficient at aggregate
level, but also a net food exporting country.
The strategy did not explicitly recognize the need to raise farmers' income and did not mention
any direct measure to promote farmers welfare. The net result has been that farmers income
remained low, which is evident from the incidence of poverty among farm households.
Entrepreneurial Initiative:
In an effort to boost the agriculture sector, the government has set the ambitious goal of doubling
farmers income by 2022. In doing so, it has unveiled strategies ranging from a focus on
irrigation to provision of quality inputs, investments in warehousing and cold chains, promotion
of food processing and crop insurance schemes, among others. What is clear is that to transform
the agriculture sector, it needs to move from a production-driven system to a demand-driven
food value chain that increasingly connects the consumer to the producers.
My Idea:
According to my opinion Bee keeping is the beneficial for farmer for side income as well as for
enhance the pollination percentage.
The second one is dairy business for farmer. The raising of cow and buffalo not only provide the
milk but also provide the dung and urine which used in organic farming for fertilizer and pest
management.also the selling of organic ghee provide the prestige price.
Sources of Income Growth:
The major sources of growth operating within agriculture sector are:
1. Inter cropping
2. Mixed cropping
3. Crop rotation
4. Organic farming
5. Optimum use of the resource
6. Scientific method of cultivation
The sources outside agriculture include:
1) Trading commodity
2) Direct selling to customer
3) Value addition
4) Packaging
5) Processing
Doubling farmers income by 2022 is quite challenging but it is needed and is attainable. Three
pronged strategy focused on (i) development initiatives, (ii) technology and (iii) policy reforms
in agriculture is needed to double farmers income.
