Detailed Lesson Preparation Guide
Elementary Education
Name: Kelsey Brice
Title: Taking action against bullying.
Grade:Second
Concept/Topic: Bullying
Time Needed: 30-45 minutes
Backward Design Approach: Where are you going with your students?
Identify Desired Results/Learning Outcome/Essential Question:
My lesson will address what bullying is and how we as a community can prevent
bullying in our classroom. As a result of my lesson students will have a clear understanding of
exactly what bullying is. We will go over what it looks like to a bully and what it looks like to be
a victim of bullying. As a community we will also discuss ways to prevent bullying in our
classroom.
Essential Questions:
What is bullying?
What do we do if we or someone we know is being bullied?
Ensuring Lesson supports district and state goals
NCSCOS Standards:
Reading
Key Ideas and Details 2.3 Describe how characters in a story respond to major
events and challenges.
SL.2.1 Build on others talk in conversations by linking their comments to the
remarks of others.
Assessment Plan:
I will provide the students with two sentence starters for them to fill out in their goal notebooks.
Bullying is when ___________________________
We can stop bullying by __________________
I will know the students grasped the concept if each student can give a reasonable
explanation of what bullying is. I would like for the students to respond with something along
the lines of Bullying is when someone is being hurt by words or actions on purpose by another
student. For the second sentence starter I would like to see any example of ways to stop
bullying. Something along the lines of We can stop bullying by telling the teacher, standing up
for the people who are being bullied, remind our friends that it's important that we are nice to one
another.
Meeting the student where they are:
Prior Knowledge/Connections:
My students have been learning a lot about respect and what it means to respect
themselves and the people around them. They can take what they have learned about being
respectful and apply that knowledge towards taking action against bullying. This prior
knowledge will come in handy when teaching the students different actions they can take against
bullying. The best way to handle bullying is in a respectful way. Instead of telling someone that
they are being a jerk because they are bullying another classmate they can handle the issue by
still respecting one another. I will help them make these connections when we get to the list
about taking action.
Lesson Introduction/Hook:
To introduce the lesson every student will receive a cut out paper heart. On this heart I
will have each student write the word bullying on it and crumple it up. They are to keep the
wrinkled heart in their laps. Then, I will read the story My Secret Bully by Trudy Ludwig. As I
am reading the story we will stop to turn and talk to a partner.
Pg.5 How is Katie being mean to Monica?
Pg.7 What could Sarah have done to help Monica?
Pg. 12 What should you do if you see someone all alone on the playground?
Pg. 16 What something you could say to someone who is bullying you?
At the end What does bullying look like?
How do you think people feel when they are bullied?
After I had read the story we will talk about the effects of bullying and how once
someone does or says something hurtful they cant just take it back. This is where the wrinkled
heart comes in. I will ask them to now look at their wrinkled hearts and see if they can make it
back to the perfectly straight heart it once was. After giving them a minute to try and put the
heart back to its original form we will discuss just like we couldnt make the heart straight again
we cant take back our words or actions that hurt someone else.
Heart of the Lesson/Learning Plans
Differentiation/Same-ation:
All students have the opportunity to participate in every activity. No one is perfect so
everyone could use a reminder on different ways to handle a tough situation like bullying. In our
community it is important that we are always kind and respectful to one another. In this lesson
everyone will have the opportunity to contribute ideas and talk about what ways they can prevent
and handle bullying.
Lesson Development:
First we will start with the engagement activity.
Next we will make a list of actions on chart paper of how we can take action against
bullying.
Remind our friends that it is important that we are nice to each other.
Ignore them and walk away.
Get help from an adult.
Use harmless humor.
Ask them why they would ask mean things.
Change the subject.
Once we come up with a list of five to ten actions we will start our activity.
Each student will receive a piece of construction paper, three white squares, and a glue
stick.
On the top of the construction paper will go their title My bullying action plan.
Once they have a title they will write the definition of bullying. Bullying is when
someone is being hurt by words or actions on purpose.
Now they will make their three flaps.
On the first piece of white paper they will write When I see someone being
bullied I will.
They will glue just the top piece of the white paper to the construction
paper to make a flap.
Under this flap they will write one of the actions that was on our list that
we made together.
On the second piece of white paper they will write If I am bullied I will..
They will glue just the top piece of the white paper to the construction
paper right next to the first flap to make a second flap.
Under this flap they will write a different action from our list.
On the third piece of white paper they will write I can prevent bullying by
They will glue just the top piece of the white paper to the construction
paper right next to the second flap.
Under this flap they will write I can prevent bullying by
Once they have finished their activity they can go and get their goal folders and fill out
their sentence starters for the assessment plan.
When they are done with their sentence starters they can come back to the carpet and
watch a wrap up video while everyone finishes.

I will wrap up this lesson by playing a short video that reviews everything we have talked
about. This will be a good way to wrap up the lesson and give the students something to do while
everyone is finishing up their activity.

Teaching Behavior Focus:
Student engagement through discussion is fostered. I feel like this topic is best discussed
when everyone is involved. Our classroom will benefit from everyones ideas and help keep
everyone accountable for their actions. I chose this topic because I really want to focus on giving
every student the opportunity to express their ideas so that every student is accountable for
preventing bullying.
Follow-Up Activities/Parent Involvement
The author of the book, My Secret Bully, Trudy Ludwig has multiple other books that
focus on different parts of bullying. This provides the parents of our students multiple
opportunities to continue the discussion on bullying. The website
https://www.stopbullying.gov/media/facts/index.html also is a great resource for parents to
continue their discussion with their children.
