DB Pre Observation Form

This pre-observation form provides details for an upcoming lesson on creating a positive classroom community that will be observed by a mentor teacher or university supervisor. The lesson aims to teach students how their words and actions can affect others and how to build classroom community through kindness. Areas the teacher wants the observer to focus on include using wait time when students respond to allow them to fully express their thoughts, and engaging with students to enhance their engagement. The teacher expects classroom management may be challenging if students get noisy sharing kind thoughts but hopes the lesson outcomes are met if students can provide examples of filling others' buckets in various environments.

Pre-Observation Form

Directions: This form is to be completed prior to every lesson that will be observed by the mentor
teacher or university supervisor. It is to be submitted no later than 3 business days prior to the actual
observation along with your lesson plans.

Name: Danielle Blinderman Date:11/27/17

1. What is the topic of your lesson? The topic of our lesson is to teach students how
we can create a positive and accepting classroom community.

2. Why are you teaching this lesson? What is your rationale for teaching it?
We are teaching this lesson so that the students can understand how their
actions and words can affect others around them. We want our students to send
kind thoughts and words to others in their class to build classroom community.
We believe that our students will enjoy this lesson and the joy that filling
someones bucket will bring to themselves and those around them.

3. What is your Teaching Behavior Focus? Why did you choose this?
My teacher behavior focus is wait time. I think that when I hear a good idea from
a student, I tend to jump in and go off of that rather than letting them finish their
thoughts.

4. Why did you design your instruction in this lesson the way that you did? Why did
you choose this way of teaching the lesson (e.g., Was the idea from a methods
course? From your mentor teacher? Another source?)
We decided to plan this lesson into more of a classroom exercise. While there
are standards linked to this lesson, we want to make this lesson more student
oriented/lead so that way we can really hear their own thoughts and ideas.

5. As you are thinking through this lesson, what do you believe will be the most
challenging part of this lesson for you when you teach it? Why?
I think that most challenging part of this lesson will be classroom management. I
think that the students will be very excited to participate and write each other kind
thoughts that they might start to get a little noisy.

6. How will you know if your learning outcomes for the students are met
successfully?
We will know that our outcomes are successful if they can give us examples of
how they can fill someones bucket daily in all of their environments, not just
school.

7. How will your classroom management support the learning outcomes?

We will be sure to transition to each activity promptly and quietly. Classroom
management is also linked to this idea of respect and kindness. We will know our
students understand our learning outcomes if they are respectful and attentive
during our lesson and transition periods.
8. List 1-3 areas which you would like for your observer to pay particular attention.
Why do you want your observer to focus on these areas?
a. Wait time: I really want to focus on wait time and give students the chance
to finish/complete their thoughts.
b. Engagement: I want to make sure that I look engaged and excited
throughout the lesson so that the students feel the same!

9. Is there anything else you would like your observer to know before the
observation?
We are SO excited to do this lesson with such a fabulous group of kids
