READ Mini Lesson Fluency and Comprehension

Tuesday, October 31, 2017 Thursday, November 2, 2017

Students will be in 3 Reading Stations/ Centers This Reading Center will be focused on Fluency.

Day 1
Introduce the handout of reading, Mollys Smile
Fluency - Discuss when reading passages out loud, we do not have to stop after each line
it is important we use the punctuations. What kind of punctuation should we look
for?
o Commas pause
o Periods stop
o Quotation marks somebody is about to speak so we think, how would this
person sound?
o Exclamation marks excitement
o Question marks asking something
Demonstrate reading out loud with students following. Tell students, Make sure you
are listening to the story, because there we are going to be asking some questions
afterwards about it.
After I read the story out loud, have students spread out and read it quietly to
themselves and practice. I will be walking aloud listening to the students and paying
attention to how they sound.
Once they are done, I will pull students back in and ask them four questions based on
their comprehension about the passage The students are responsible for writing down
their answers (worksheet will be provided):
o Who is the main character in the story?
o What was the problem?
o How was the problem solved?
o What speaks 1,000 words?

Day 2
Pull out same reading from yesterday
Students will rotate meeting me outside throughout the hour to practice reading this
passage out loud they will be timed and observed for the fluency of their reading in
the hallway (observation sheet attached)
Students who did not finish answering the questions will have time to finish the
questions from the day before
If students complete this, then they may do independent and AR reading

Day 3
If any students still need time to finish the comprehension activity, they can do so. All
other students must read/AR reading
I will take students out individually again and challenge them to increase their time
