Competency 2: To communicate clearly in the language of instruction, both orally
PROFESSIONAL and in writing, using correct grammar, in various contexts related to teaching
COMPETENCIES: I have chosen this competency because I would like my instructions to be clear
when I am explaining a lesson to the students. I have noticed at times while
teaching I will use slang terms. I would like to improve on this.
Competency 4: To pilot teaching/learning situations that are appropriate to the
students concerned and to the subject content with a view of developing the
competencies targeted in the programs of study
I have chosen this competency because it was one of the two I was hoping to
improve on during this field experience. I have not yet had much experience
planning and carrying out a lesson therefore I would like to continue to work on
developing this competency.
Introduction:
Teaching portion
- I will begin the lesson by reminding the students that we will be working
5-7 on paragraphs today. I will tell the students that I will be showing them
minutes
a short video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFCqmKmPMIU)
- I will ask all the students to turn their chairs to face the smartboard, and
to change places if they cannot see
- I will tell the students that after they have watched the video, I will be
asking them what was the main subject the video was teaching us
about?
- After watching the video once, I will ask the students this question.
- We will then watch the video for a second time. Before showing the
students the video for the second time, I will warn them that after they
have seen it, I will ask them what are the three types of sentences the
video is talking about?
- After the video, I will ask the students this question. Once I have
received some answers from the students, I will display my slide about
paragraphs, for the students to see, on the smartboard. I will go over
the different kinds of sentences that the video discussed.
- Now keeping this knew information in mind, they will participate in a
group activity.
Development:
Group work
10 - As a warm-up exercise, the students will play Scrambled Sentences.
minutes There will be six groups (3 grade four groups, 3 grade 5 groups). Each
group will be given 7 sentences (grade 5 will be given 9 sentences)
that are on separate strips of paper. As a group, they will need to go
through the sentences and create a paragraph. The grade 4 students
will need to put the sentences in order, as well as omit the information
that does not belong. The grade five students will be doing the same
activity; however they will have a more challenging paragraph to
complete, with more sentences to eliminate. After approximately 5
minutes I will call upon two groups to share their paragraphs with the
class.
Individual Work (20-30 minutes)
- Next, I will have students take out their writing copybooks. I will show
them the Hamburger Writing worksheet and relate it to what they saw
in the video. I will tell them that they are using this as a tool in order to
create a paragraph. I will ask two students to handout the worksheet. I
will ask them to open their copybook and glue the hamburger handout
in their copybook on a new page (left side).
- I will tell the students that they will be writing a paragraph, using the
prompt If I had three wishes I will display my own example on the
smart board in order for them to see. I will explain that they will be
using the handout to plan their paragraph, and then will copy it into the
right side of their book once the rough copy is finished. I will remind
the students to write the date and a title when they are writing their
good copy.
** Grade 5 students will be expected to explain each wish they have
chosen.
Differentiation:
- Grade 5 students will be given more difficult sentences for the group
activity
- Students are working in teams for beginning portion of the lesson. This
allows their teammates to help them if they have not yet grasped the
concept
- Children on IEP who may struggle with the paragraph will only need to
write 2 wishes if time does not permit
- Grade 5 students will need to produce a more lengthy paragraph in
comparison to the Grade 4 students
TIME ACTIVITY
Closure/Transition
Students who finish quickly will be asked to colour their hamburger and to draw a
picture to go along with their Three Wishes paragraph. The students also have a cursive
5-7 package and a fall package to work on whenever they finish their work early.
minutes
- I will ask the students to read their paragraphs with their teams once they are
completed. I will circulate the classroom and listen in on the students discussion.
Evaluation:
- Journals will be collected and assessed based off of the 3 different sentences
that were introduced to the students that day. This will be their first lesson of the
year on paragraphs therefore it will not be a difficult assessment. I will just be
looking to see if the students could transfer their separated sentences into one
paragraph.
What next?
Follow-up activities:
Students will be asked to write journal entries throughout the year. This is the
introductory lesson to writing journals and how to formulate a paragraph.
