Today class, we are going to be making colour wheels. Colour wheels show us
Introduction
how colours are related. They remind artists how to mix and think about colours.
(3 min)
Before we can make our colour wheel we have to learn what primary and
                   secondary colours are.
                    - Show students the example colour wheel
               Mini-lecture -
               - Teacher Actions
oWatch the video of primary colours https://www.youtube.com/watch?
                   v=bmquqAP2w_8
oIntroduce and write on the smartboard primary colours- red, yellow and blue
               - Ask students if they know what one primary colour is? And so on
               - Primary colours cannot be made from other colours. Artists create all the other
colours of the rainbow by mixing together two primary colours.
Mini-lecture oIntroduce and write on the smartboard secondary colours- orange, green, and
(12 min) purple which is also called violet
               - Ask students if they know what the secondary colours are?
               - Ask why do you think secondary colour is a good name for these colours?
Because it takes two colours to make the new colour
               - Ask students if they remember what primary colours create each secondary
colour one at a time and write it on the board. Remind students that we went
over this some groups this morning and yesterday. RED + YELLOW = ORANGE,
YELLOW + BLUE = GREEN and BLUE + RED = PURPLE. Ask students if it matters
what order we mix the colours in? No
               Demonstration of colour wheel
               -Teacher Actions
o As a class we are going to start by doing the primary colours of the wheel.
o I will demonstrate in front of the class how to paint in the triangle leaving a
blank triangle between each colour. The two primary colours beside the blank
triangle are what we mix together to create each secondary colour. Tell the
students how the secondary colour is made from the two primary colours that
                   it touches.
o Have pictures on the whiteboard to remind students what it should look like
o tell students that Mrs. Herrell and I will come around to every table and put a
drop of red on one of your triangles once you have printed your name on the
back of your plate and you are going to spread the paint out to cover your
Colour wheel entire triangle.
(30 min) o If you need more red or are ready for the next colour you will put your hand up
and stay seated! I dont want to see anyone walking around and coming up to
                   myself or Mrs. Herrell.
o You will be ready for the next colour when you have painted your triangle and
have rinsed off your brush in the water container at your center and dried it
                   with your paper towel.
o If I see that you did not paint just one triangle with that colour you will not get
to continue the rest of your colour wheel.
I need three volunteers, hands up and I am going to pick someone who has been
quiet and listening the whole time to help me pass out the plates, paper towel and
               the paint brushes.
o We will continue with secondary colours if there is time using the same
                   procedure.
Closure - Ask one student from each group to collect the brushes and one to grab the
(5 minutes) water container and put it in the sink.
               - Have students place their plates at the front table to dry and every table has to
be cleaned up before we move on. If there is paint on the desks get slightly
damp paper towel to clean it up.
             Review concepts during next lesson:
What are the primary colours (red, yellow, blue) and what are the secondary
                colours (orange, green, purple)
Which primary colours mix to give each secondary colour
Reflection
The students work turned out really good for whole group instruction. It was
important to have clear instruction and since this procedure for mixing and
painting worked, I will use it for my mouse paint lesson as well. It took less time
than expected and the review/ closure was good because students were really
grasping the concepts of primary and secondary colours, which makes me very
happy that I am actually teaching them! The colour wheel serves as a good
reminder of how to mix primary colours to make secondary colours. Remember
when mixing red and yellow to make orange, you need a lot less red than yellow.
