What are you producing? Why did you choose this?
I am creating a Radio Station called Unifyed, it is aimed towards University Students,
and it intends to educate, entertain and inform students via a broad range of segments
from music, revision tips, expert advice, and interviews with people from a range of
different educational sectors who have made a tremendous success in their given area.
The reason I choose to do a station that purely focuses on student topics is because
there is no competition to currently rival my idea, there arent any stations that currently
focuses directly an helping or giving a more clear view of the world outlook towards a
younger demographic, so I wanted to create a station that gives youth based
educational, funky, fun station so by creating a station it fills a gap the is currently empty
and is not filled by any sort of resource such as my idea.
For example if I was to expand my idea, I hope would create a beneficial system of
giving are youth/Adult demographic an outlook into political climate, how to prepare for
the Workplace (terms of politics/student finance) and after education jobs/CV/Personal
Statement. So the station is to prepare our young people via multiple educational/visual
and audio resources therefore using relevant media source to reach out to the
audience.
What is the genre of your station?
In terms of genres of what Unifyed would relay to its consumers, it intends to entertain
and engage a broad range of younger peers it intends enlighten young people and help
in terms of revision, relaxation methods music, interviews with students and exam
experts, and chat with students on their issues, or what they would want our station to
include (elements). So the station is very educationally fixated to help benefit, during
and after educational, and terms of helping of life/job preparation.
Why did you choose this genre?
The reason I choose this genre is because, most young people struggle with the
progression of making CV and not many stations actually focus on preparation for our
young people who are moving on to after education into jobs within the workplace. And
this genre allows me to be involved as I know people who would categorize themselves
within the audience circle; it allows me to either change parts of the firstly established
idea. According to changes within the social group, so I can make this genre the fit
around to what my research specifically finds. In terms of what would be on this station
and personally what my audience would find beneficial if they were listening to such a
station for the first time. So to conclude the reason I have chosen this genre is because
is yet to be explored and has a lot of flexibility to creative, but not limiting different
methods of how I could either rely music, revision tips to the audience.
Who is the target audience?
In terms of Demographics in relation to what Unifyed it intends to entertain and engage
a broad range of young listeners, with a distinctive mix of contemporary music and
audio (speech/chat). Its predominant target audience (Primary Audience) is between
18-29 years old, Unifyed would be a station for University Students. With recognizable
local people or students who from the community have made success from their areas
of education, the station would also have ads suggesting recommendations of university
available around UK that may be available for students to discover options in their
interest area.
What conventions will you use in your news bulletin?
In terms conventions I will need to consider during my broadcast is, Firstly voice this is
key signifier and can convey a variety of emotions to the audience, so when opening
having low tone, with a slow-mid rhythm to convey the severity of the element of news
this is beneficial to convey to the audience the extremity of the story.
Also I will need to consider the volume of voice, a loud voice can express excitement
but can also sound as if shouting at the audience, and having a low voice can make the
audience switch altogether and make the presenter sound shy, so having a mid volume
allows for clarity and to be direct without sounding either shy, or dominating.
This would also come under presenting style as it follows how the presenter talks to
their demographic, so talking to my audience on terms of who they talk to each would
be more interactive than trying to talk in either a more sophisticated way than being
clear with whom the demographic actually talks.
Who will your presenter/reported be?
In terms of who will be presenting the my station, I plan for myself to be the main host
(news presenter) of the station, this again relates to connection to the audience with
students being the main presenters being students it allows for more connection and
level understanding of what the audience may be asking or wanting to know, also the
task to maybe having to find a secondary presenter for outside (exterior reporting) as
this gives a variety of to the reports so the plan to be the main anchor. The plan to have
a variety of female as not to segregate a male audience only so have a distinctive mix
presenters it makes the station more culturally acceptable as it does not stay to one
place or presenter.
What news stories will you include?
In terms of News stories I have chosen to include within my radio broadcast are as
follows:
McDonalds faces strikes over union demands for 10 (2nd Story)
Franklin college a-level and BTEC results (3rd Story)
Children being let down by 'alarming' lack of mental health care planning (Top
Story)
Susan Calman & Kevin Clifton in movie week (5th Story)
I love Grimsby town but this is the one thing I would change (4th Story)
The reason I have chosen if for two reason firstly because of where my demographic is
target and secondly news values, for my top story I found this had a gripping headline
but also a progression of info but negativity which would keep the audience gripped and
interested in the story as it progresses through, secondly personalisation due to
stereotypical persona it could be culturally more accurate to the vicinity it is aimed at so
therefore a more typical and more realistic opening story for my broadcast. As you can
then see from my stories listed (above) I have a progression of stories I feel that may be
relevant to my demographic, also I choose to have the stories progress in terms of
negativity to positivity as this follows a more beneficial and follows the typical route in
which usual news bulletins are broadcast so following this route allows for progression
onto either a hotly debated topic, or a more positive topic so outlining my broadcast like
this is more beneficial into giving realism to the audience.
What legal and ethical issues do you need to consider?
In terms of my stories I have allocated with name and Letter to signify the issues that
could be relevant in terms of Regulations set out by OFCOM (The Office of
Communications)
A (Top Story/Opening Bulletin): In terms of ethical/legal issues that could be apparent
within this, some people who I are topic of interview should not be named or details
given as this is impeaching the confidentiality code, so restricting questions of who
consumers can help benefit people who have been through predicaments such as
outlined in the article is more responsible better course to keep the audience involved.
B (2nd Story): Ethical/Legal Issues that could exist within this story if employees talk
about this subject, and it against rules outlined in their contract this could hinder the
judgement of further action that could be taken in relation to their pay rise.
C (3rd Story): Ethical/legal issues that could be apparent within this, some people who I
interview may not be a the requirement age of 18 so I do not have consent for
interviewing, so permission needs to be gained as a mandatory requirement if anyone is
under the required age.
D (4th Story): Legal and ethical issues that could surround this subject is that some
players may have an invalid opinion or respect privacy and not have a truthful opinion
so getting a developed opinion by both players and not discriminating against other
players so developing why players should come from the origins and why the current
team may not be succeeding.
E (5th Story/Closing Bulletin): Legal and Ethical Issues that could arise, if the interview
was carried out by Kevin and he said something such as an exit on next week's show,
and the BBC outlined the as a breach of legal requirements I could then not use this so
making sure that info that could disrupt the show for other viewers I must be cautious to
edit material so that it does not disrupt or spoil the current series.
