HISTORY PART I
THE NAME
The Mortise and Tenon. What
does it mean? Is it the owner’s last
names? Is it code for something se-
cret?

Our name originates from a joint

used in cabinetry and barn building from days of old. The
end of the first member is called the tenon, and it is usually
narrowed with respect to the rest of the piece. The hole in the
second member is called the mortise. The joint may be glued,

Woodville, Ohio 43469 FROM KOC TO TMT
Jeff and Gina Scheff, store owners and Elmore residents,
packed up and moved to the Amish countryside in 1994.
There, they managed a furniture store in Kidron, Ohio named
The Kidron Oak Connection. The store was limited in square
footage, but packed a mighty punch in the furniture and gift
item market. KOC was visited frequently by many tour bus-
ses as the store was located behind the famed attraction, Leh-
man’s Hardware. In 1999, Jeff and
Gina seized an opportunity to pur-
chase The KOC from Chuck Long,
who owned and operated a store in
Woodville, Ohio called Reflections
of the Past. In 2005, Jeff and Gina
were approached about purchasing
the building that housed Reflections
of the Past. The couple then made
another move of inventory and
opened The Mortise and Tenon in
March, 2005. Although, the KOC
in the Amish countryside no longer
exists, the same morals and values
are carried over to TMT.
