Lesson 11. Freedom in Christ

This document discusses the freedom that Christians have in Christ and distinguishes this from legalism and licentiousness. It states that in Christ believers are free from sin, condemnation, the world's corruption, the curse of the law, idolatry, slavery to the law, the devil, and eternal death. However, this freedom is not a license to sin but rather leads believers to serve one another out of love, fulfilling the purpose of the law. Legalism commits one to perfect obedience of the law for salvation, rejecting justification by faith, while licentiousness indulges in sinful desires. True freedom fulfills the law from an inward motivation of love rather than external obligation.

A FREEDOM IN CHRIST. Galatians 5:1.

What are we free from in Christ?

From sin (Romans 6:18)
Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
From condemnation (Romans 8:1)
There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who
walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
From the worlds corruption (Galatians 1:4)
Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world,
according to the will of God and our Father:
From the curse of the law (Galatians 3:13)
Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it
is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:
From idolatry (Galatians 4:8)
How be it then, when ye knew not God, ye did service unto them which by nature
are no gods.
From the slavery of the law (Galatians 5:1)
Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not
entangled again with the yoke of bondage.
From the devil (Hebrews 2:14)
Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself
likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had
the power of death, that is, the devil;
From eternal death (Hebrews 2:15)
And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to
bondage.
We havent paid for our own freedom. Jesus paid the price at the Cross (1 Corinthians
6:20; 7:23). We dont need to do anything to become free.
LIVE LIKE FREE MAN NOT UNDER BONDAGE
B FREEDOM AND LEGALISM. Galatians 5:2-12.
Why was a little cut in the flesh so important to Paul? It seemed like an insignificant
action (Galatians 5:2-12)
Those who were circumcised were committing to keep ALL the law to be saved (v.
3).
That is justification by works, so they were rejecting the justification God gives in
Christ (v. 4).
Thats a big hindrance in the way of spiritual growth (v. 7).
Circumcision removes the offense of the Cross. When you want to save yourself,
the message of the Cross is offensive to human pride, because we have to
acknowledge that we are completely dependent on Christ (v. 11).
Danger of legalistic.
Doing the law to earn the favor of God
Obligated to obey the whole law.
Cut off from Christ / self defendent
It hinders spiritual growth
C FREEDOM AND LICENTIOUSNESS. Galatians 5:13.
Instead of indulging our sins, our freedom leads us to serve [to become slaves] for
love.
If we willingly become servants [slaves] because we love our neighbor, then were
fulfilling the law (Romans 13:10).
Freedom is not a license to do anything you want, to down others.
D FREEDOM AND LAW. Galatians 5:14-15.
Jesus made it clear: keeping the letter of the law and fulfilling the purpose of the
commandment are different things (Matthew 5-7).
Paul used the word fulfilling because means more than just doing. That obedience
is caused by Jesus in us.
It is not an abandonment of the law, nor a reduction of the law only to love; it is the
way through which the believer could experience the true intent and meaning of the
whole law!

Doing the law for the sake of doing to be save.
